The last thread got totally hijackedc, so I thought we would start over.
"Lifelong" Mormon and newspaper editor from Alabama wrote a commentary that was published in the SL Trib today objecting to the Church taking the public position it has on California's Prop 8. Do you think he will be asked to attend a disciplinary council? Should he be?

Should the writer of this opinion piece be disciplined?

He might be. He can defend himself by saying he objects to religions being involved in politics, not to the Proclamation on the Family and related doctrinal positions of the LDS religion. If he sticks to the political angle, I don't think the church would dare to make an example out of him.

I think it really depends on how far he pushes it and whether it is picked up locally (Alabama). If the author lets it go at this, I predict there will be no backlash. If he continues with public condemnation, local members via a whisper campaign or SLC will call for disciplinary action.

No.
Should he be?
If he comes out against the Church's stand on gay marriage, he should. In the piece, he didn't, but I suspect it's more likely that people who make this kind of argument are also opposed to the Church's stand on gay marriage.
