Question for Dr. Peterson about his Islamic studies and work

Post by _Boaz & Lidia »

Dan,

Are you the Jan Shipps of Islam?

I admit I have not read any of your Islamic work. However, if I may, a few questions?

Since you only believe in the God of Mormonism, you cannot believe in Allah, correct? And therefore your Islamic studies and work is not at all apologetic in nature.

With that, I am curious about the gist of your work. What are you doing there? What point are you trying to make? Are you just merely reporting facts of their history and evolution?

Given the strong similarities between Mormonism and Islam, do you get much flak from Muslims? Similar to the flak that you Mormon apologists give to Christians.

That's correct.

I'm trying to understand and to help others understand.

There are also enormous differences.

Not much.

We are Christians, and we don't give non-Mormon Christians much "flak."

Happy to have helped.

You're welcome.

Since we're on the topic, I'll ask:

How closely wedded to the Qur'An / Koran (however it's spelled) is Sharia law? Can one believe in the former and reject the latter, sort of like how Christ accepted the Old Testament but rejected "the traditions of the Elders?"
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

Oh yeah, and please settle these long-standing controversies:

What on earth is the correct spelling of "Qur'An" or "Koran" or however it's spelled?

Also, what on earth is the correct spelling of "Muhammad" or "Mohammed" or however it's spelled?

Thanks in advance,
Shades

There is a fantastic article this month in National Geographic magazine on Iran. I learned that they see the invasion of the Arabs and their religion as the lowest point in their history. very interesting reading. They also have a strong distate fro all things Arab, and have clung to their original language in the 1500 years or so since the invasion, this dispite a past edict that if they were caught speaking their own language their tounges were to be cut out.

Thanks for playing Danny.

I asked because she is a non Mormon LDS scholar. You are a non Muslim Islamic scholar..
Care to expound on your answer? Is this because she is more harsh on LDS than you are on Muslims? Less? Or you feel she is more than you? Less?

Here we go with the merry-o-round... Do you believe Allah is a God like you believe Elohim is a God?
Do you believe Islam is TRUE?

Who understand what? Who is your primary audience? Why would I ask a Mormon for the straight dope on Muslims? I mean c'mon, if one would want to know about Chevrolet cars why would they ask as Ford dealer?

Besides both men speaking with God, being told to write a book, and practicing and advocating polygamy?

Daniel Peterson wrote:Not much.
Perhaps this is due to your audience? I guess like many LDS who do not look to Jan Shipps, most Muslims do not look to you?

Right. FARMS/MI is full of that. Anytime a christian inquires about something unique about Mormonism they questioned for their belief in something similar in the Bible.

Here is a question you probably get all the time: When sitting in your office working on Arabic stuff, does it help to put on one of those linen headwraps?

Dude, that is like asking Jan Shipps if she wears garments while studying Mormonism!

And it looks like it fits in very well with your particular flavor of Mormonism:

The Qur'an cites the story of "people of Lot" (also known as the Sodomites) who were destroyed because they engaged in homosexual acts. The legal punishment for sodomy has varied among juristic schools: some prescribe capital punishment; while other prescribe a milder discretionary punishment. Homosexuality is a crime and forbidden in most Islamic countries, Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc. In some relatively secular or multi-religious Islamic countries, this is not the case, Algeria, Malaysia, Indonesia and Turkey being examples.

I guess Bishop Peterson is either in a late PEC meeting or listening to the details of some dry humping gone to far in a bishops interview with one of his CT coeds..

Or we scared him off?
