A few days back, someone "All-seeing-Eye" posted a hypothetical question on MADB:

Hypothetical:

The Lord reveals to Thomas S. Monson that polygamy is to be practiced on Earth once again. You have a 15-year-old daughter. Thomas S. Monson approaches you and asks you for your permission to allow your daughter to be married to him as his plural wife.

What do you do? How do you feel?

The tread was eventually closed, but some **edit** "nice individuals" actually said they would pray about it, and have their daughter pray about it, and if the answer from god was positive, they'd have their daughter marry the old codger. Does anyone else see a problem with this?

2. Therefore, I'd know that Pres Monson was definitely not receiving any such inspiration from God (anymore than Joseph received it from God originally).

I would attempt to record it and go public. Next would be a restraining order. After that, I would break both of his legs with a baseball bat before cutting of his d*** with my flaming sword.

I'm not sure what else believers could say, given that this is the justification given for not seeing a problem with Joseph Smith' marriages.

The problem I have with it is that "getting a confirmation from God", with variations in cultural terminology, is the same process that people use to decide that God wants them to castrate themselves, kill themselves, or kill others. This is the same process that people use to come to all sorts of contradictory positions.

So if the source of this is really God, then It is a psychopathic malicious being and people of integrity should resolutely avoid seeking Its advice at all costs.

However, it's far more likely that the source of this is the internal machinations of the human mind, replete with all its illogic and abilities to create persuasive arguments and equally persuasive emotions.

Let's modify it just a tad. He asks to marry your 15 year-old daughter after marrying the 15-year old daughters of three other couples in your ward. In his apartment during the request, your eye catches a stack of video tapes. Honeymoon: Susan, Honeymoon: Linda, Honeymoon+++ Loran(!)

But this is how stupid Mormons can be.

If the prophet tells an Internet Mormon that the the Hill Cumorah is in New York, she will retort immediately in horror, "that's only his opinion!" But if the elderly prophet asks to marry her 15 year old daughter, she'll stop and think reflectively, "I'd have to pray about it."

U LDS mo-fo's have one weird set of criteria to judge by when determining if a prophet is speaking as a prophet or as a man.
