Bond,
I was reading about that earlier this evening. They had a link on RFM. So very tragic.

It's pretty sad to hear of a tragedy like this.
And I hope the low-lifes taking this opportunity ripping into the Church will desist.

I was under the impression that these treks were not on modern roads. Is it typical for them to be on the road with vehicles?
There was glare in the news paper's pictures. It is easy to see how someone could be blinded by the sun driving up that road.
Sad situation.

So awful. They should not have been on the road, in my opinion -- make it more authentic by sticking to the dirt ground. My condolences to the victims' families.

All right, I'll say it:
What the Hell were they doing in the middle of the road?
A + B = C.

From my reading of the story and comments, it seems the handcart was on the side of the highway; however, that was still an incredibly dangerous place to be, and in my opinion, completely irresponsible.
Comments from people who have traveled that stretch of highway indicate that the road is winding, steep and has almost no shoulder. Cars travel upwards of fifty miles per hour on it.
I cannot, for the life of me, understand a parent allowing their children to participate in such a foolish, ill-planned, and obviously dangerous undertaking. It would be inadvisable to walk that stretch of road--but to add a slow-moving covered wagon and handcarts?! What were they thinking?
I am sick that a fourteen year old little girl's life ended so tragically and unnecessarily. None of them should have been on that road. My heart goes out to her family, but my sympathies lie with the little girl who's parents irresponsibly allowed her to push a handcart on the narrow shoulder of a winding, steep, state highway. She lost her life. I am the parent of a fourteen year old girl, and I would never allow her to do such a thing. I wouldn't have done it as a Mormon, pioneer trek or no.
What a tragedy.
