Noel00 asks some interesting questions over at MADB about the "knife":

Just a question. Is there any fibers in the glue where the knife is supposed to have been?

Baer says the following:

the vignette [Facsimile 1] was probably in essentially the same condition in 1835 that it is now, and the restorations, both that sketched on the backing and that in "Facsimile No. 1" in the PGP, are not copies of the missing parts.
The identification [of Anubis in Facsimile 1] is assured by the black color of the body and many parallels, e.g., Mariette, Denderah, IV, pi. 70-71 and the countless examples of Anubis attending a mummy on a lion-couch (BD 151 and often elsewhere). He is, of course, not holding a knife.

Baer refers to a few minor instances where glue/fiber residue on the backing paper indicates that portions have fallen off or been scraped off since the papyri were mounted. But he repeatedly states that he thinks Facsimile 1 is in basically the same shape today as it was in Joseph Smith's day, so he does not seem to have noticed any residue here. (Admittedly, however, he does not explicitly deny that there is residue here, either.)

Again from Noel00:

Also the V shaped gap appears in the BOB also and this is where if I remember rightly where the scribes "invented" symbols on the KEP (Book of Abraham Manuscript)

This is an excellent point. I went ahead and put together a couple overlays that try to match up the damage on Facsimile 1 (which is the outer wrap and therefore will be slightly more damaged than the inner ones) with the damage on the next wrap.

As you can see, the contours of the damage in the area in question are comparable. If the "knife" had been originally present on the papyrus, we would expect that to be reflected in the contours of the damage on the left-hand wrap. It is not. To the contrary, said contours appear to show that the present damage to Facsimile 1 in this area is basically the same as it was when Joseph Smith acquired the papyrus.

Best,
