I didn't hear much of conference. My wife had it on while I did other things and what I heard was basically the sames things I've heard for the past 30 years. I was wondering if anyone commented on the current financial mess. I'm not trying to make a point, I honestly don't know.

The answer is yes. Unfortunately, I don't remember too many details. I remember something about Zion and taking care of the poor among us since that's a Celestial law (or maybe terrestrial). Others mentioned it too--the world in a bit of turmoil from the market.

I missed two sessions but the only thing I heard was 30 seconds in priesthood where Pres. Monson said that we live in troubled times and that we should make sure nobody goes hungry or without shelter.

I thought someone would have said something more.

It would surprise me if nothing more is said, because this is one area where the church has tried in recent years to give good, practical advice. They've stressed living within your means and staying out of debt for a long time, so you would think this would be their chance to take a little credit. The Pope made a comment yesterday about financial institutions being built on sand. That got me thinking that with General Conference taking place right smack in the middle of the financial crisis the church might have made a similar comment. I don't agree with the church's tithing policies, and believe that telling members to stay out of debt while also asking for 10% of their income is a little rediculous, but if you ignore the tithing emphasis, the church has given good practical financial advice that most financial experts would agree with, and the mess the world is in was caused by people not following this advice.

I remember one speaker quoting a great line from Brigham Young to the effect that things may be bad, but nobody needs to worry about starving; not until we have eaten the last mule from the tips of his ears to the end of his fly snapper.

Say what you like about Brigham Young being a prophet, when I hear things like that, it makes me wonder where all the leaders have gone to.

Can you imagine the response had Pres. Monson gave an I told you so talk referring to his talks on living within our means, avoiding second mortgages, etc?

Really now, think about it. The people with half a brain don't need to be reminded that they didn't follow the counsel the Church has been pushing for years. At this point I'm sure many of them are kicking themselves hard enough. And the people who still don't understand that the GA teachings and Church backed teachings could have guided them on a better financial path, well, they would invariably just be offended at a childish, 'We told you so and you didn't listen! Now you're paying the price!' spirited comment.

The truth is hard to swallow. Especially when the house you're living in is too large, too expensive, too lavish for what you can afford, but you think you deserve it.
