Good News

Post by _KimberlyAnn »

I'm sick of politics. I'm tired of bad news.

Sometimes, I just feel mired down by sad things, and I am always glad to get a reminder that there are many wonderful folks in the world. I got such a reminder just now.

There is a little Methodist church in north Tulsa. The church building itself is tiny, but that congregation has a huge heart. They operate a food bank--a rather large food bank--and it's amazing that they do it with such meager resources.

They want to start supplying for the needs of infants and their mothers who fall on hard times and need things like diapers and infant formula, but infant formula and diapers are very expensive. I wanted to help. (Now, my contribution was meager and not the point of the thread, so please don't comment on it!) I bought fifty cheap baby bottles, placed them in a basket, and made a pitiful homemade sign and placed my ramshackle display in the hallway of my south Tulsa church. It took me no time at all. I call the project "Baby Bottle Boomerang." (I tweaked an idea from someone else. I'm not that clever on my own.)

The idea is that folks take a baby bottle home and fill it with change, bring it back, and take a new empty bottle back home with them. I keep emptying bottles and placing them back in the basket. It runs the whole month of October.

I've been thrilled with the response! All the bottles were picked up the first Sunday, and even children are filling bottles with money from their piggy banks.

A few minutes ago, the church secretary called me and said that someone turned in a bottle to her containing $5,000. I am overwhelmed. Counting that, the food bank has almost $7,800. for infant formula--and that's just in the first third of the month.

There are so many good people in the world and it's nice to be reminded of that. It's even better to associate with them. I feel very thankful.

What has this to do with Mormonism? I'm not sure. But, Baby Bottle Boomerang might be a great service project for the youth in a ward somewhere, yes?

That's awesome, KA.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

I think it's an excellent idea.
One moment in annihilation's waste,
one moment, of the well of life to taste-
The stars are setting and the caravan
starts for the dawn of nothing; Oh, make haste!

It's really great to hear people doing more for those less fortunate.

I hate that people (myself included) tend to forget those going through a struggle until Thanksgiving and Christmas. Kudos to you for doing this!

Awesome Kim !

Great idea. My wife just became a MIA maid advisor, I'll tell her about this.

It's a really easy project, Gaz.

The good thing is that it doesn't cost that much to buy bottles, and they can be shared with other groups who would like to try the same thing. My bottles will go to my friend's Baptist church in November, when my Baby Bottle Boomerang is finished. They're going to raise money for an orphanage they help support.

It works, I think, because it's easy to remember that by putting change in a baby bottle, one is helping to feed a hungry baby.

Sounds great KA.

I wonder if it would work to help pay for my drinking?

With the stocks in the toilet, I need to drink MORE, but again with the stocks down I cannot afford the Cognac which makes me even more depressed.

I need to find a mess of empty Cognac bottles and a cardboard box... too bad I tossed all of my empty Cognac bottles over the past year....

Seriously though, I am glad there are folks in need and people who feel the need to serve. A great match.

So... my stash under the mattress is looking pretty awesome right now. At least I didn't lose anything when the market slid to the South Pole.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.
