Even MORE backlash: Prop 8 protest at Salt Lake Temple, 11/7
Apparently there is more and more PR nightmares in store for the LDS church. I just heard from a few friends and acquaintences that there will be a protest outside the Salt Lake Temple tomorrow night (Friday November 7) at 6pm. Has anyone else heard? I'll be attending.
The Facebook event page reads:
"We're meeting at Temple Square at the corner of North Temple and State Street at 6PM [Friday, November 7, 2008]
"Not since the Stonewall Riots of 1969 in NYC have we as a community really stood up for our rights in a determined way. Our Pride Parades are an event, not a protest. Our court battles are fought by few while we watch from the comfort of our living rooms. Our petitions we sign while shopping online.
"Society as a whole underestimates us. They underestimate our size. They underestimate our determination. They underestimate our conviction. They underestimate our power. Now is the time that we need to remind them.
"This week the religious activists in California decided to take our civil rights, which they take for granted, and they put it up for a majority vote. Even more despicable than voting to take away rights of a minority is the fact that major religions, especially the Mormon Church, dedicated, and in some instances mandated, that their members dedicate time and money to passing this discriminatory cause.
"I move that we rally at the heart of their operations. Let’s march around Temple Square and the Church Office Building. Let’s show them that we are many, that we are powerful, and that we will not sit idle as they force their religion into our lives and into national politics.
"I’ve contacted the City and the SLPD and have organized a protest rally on Friday, November 7th at 6pm. Please show up with your posters, flags and banners (and dress warmly and fabulously!). Bring your friends and your relatives. Pass this message along to EVERYONE you know who has any respect for the rights of other people. Let’s show the Church that we’ve had enough of their political influence in our lifes!"
Although this invite seems to be geared to the GLBT community, it seems to be a protest for everyone.

Dress fabulously! ROFL.
This just feeds into the religious paranoid mindset. So many Mormons think the gays are out to "get them" in some way, and now they're going to organize in SLC at the temple and prove them right. In the minds of the "persecuted", anyway.
I've talked to a handful of relatives, my bishop, a couple others in my ward, and I have read the words of the MADites and other Mormons on the internet, and I'm convinced that many Mormons will see protests at temple square as proof positive that Satan really is behind it all - and that he's working over time to bring down the Lord's "true church" because the Lord poked Satan's minions, the gays, in the eye.
It would be hilarious if it weren't so damned sad. I know this falls on deaf ears amongst the religious, but it's all made up! There is no Satan out to get you, or stop "the Lord's" servants. There is no Lord! These aren't his servants! They just say they are, and you grant them power by obeying them. Same as every congregation throughout all time on Earth has granted their shamans, priests, imams, and what have you power by obeying them, too.
What there are, however, are your fellow human beings, and they're pretty pissed off at you right now. Would that you could understand why.

Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

You push people too hard and they retaliate, get mean and do things that can't be undone. Matthew Shepard in Wyoming found this out.
The homosexuals pushing in Utah will only lead to violence, retialiation, injury and death as some of those Morons who feel threatened retaliate.

How did Matthew Shepard push those who killed him? I don't think I understand.

Hobart, the very thought that someone is different or doing something you don't like, don't approve of or you fear is enough to set off idiots and paranoids. Shepard was drug to death behind a pickup. I heard a number in Brigham City in a café laughing about it inbetween blaming all BYU footballs problems on 'the niggers'.
Mormons are going to have problems over this for some time to come. Both groups will be tarnished by their inability to get along and the idiot need for some to MAKE others do what their version of belief tells them is right.
These nutjobs are dealing from a position of fear and retaliation is going to get worse before it gets better. Add in a 'colored person', 'the seed of Cain' as President-elect and you have a lot of fear and frustration in Utah and among many Mormons right now.
I wouldn't go anywhere near these gatherings for either side.

I do think emotions are running high and a lot of people aren't acting as rationally as they could. . . .and when one believes "God said so" there is no rational discussion or comprimise at all. I will go, but I will high tail it out of there if there is too much emotion. I can see the possibility of protesters getting arrested for walking on Main Street plaza or even overturning cars if they get out of hand. SLPD doesn't know how many people to expect (it could be less than a hundred, but it might be several thousand....nobody can even guess at this point). But the idea of being shot by some right-wing nut job actually sounds like fun. . . .what a way to go! Watch for me on the news!

Oh, i'm sorry...I couldn't hear you over the sound of your persecution complex getting a hardon.

Just so you know, you cannot be a mod over here either.
