What is the 'Traditional Definition' of Marriage?
Just curious. Can anyone provide a source as to what marriage 'traditionally' is?

Man and woman forming a social contract to be sexually and emotionally exclusive and to jointly share the burden/joy of raising children.

I'm pretty sure that's not what it was about for royal marriages back in medevil days.
I still think we should start a petition for the legal definition of man and woman. It would provide an interesting loophole for proposition 8.

Can you provide a source for that? I'm not trying to get you or anything. I'm honestly trying to figure out where this 'traditional definition' comes from, what the source is, who defined it that way, what the specifics are, etc.

I made it up. If you go back further in time it's also much more about property (and still is to a lesser extent) so I probably should have included that. Oh well.
Source: The Great Nehor made it up.

The Traditional definition of Marriage is one man and one woman. It is Not one man and more than woman. And It is Not one man and another man. The Traditional definition of Marriage is indeed one man and one woman. And It is as Simple as that.

Heh, good point. Some believe that gender is eternal, but biological blurriness is common enough that the International Olympic Committee has protocols to deal with "women" who don't seem to fit the proper profile.
The Gender Trap
Suspected athletes will be evaluated from their external appearances by experts and undergo blood tests to examine their sex hormones, genes and chromosomes for sex determination.
Should suspicious couples be tested to ensure that the applicants really constitute a definitive male/female pair? What happens if they don't? In the Olympics, a person can be barred from compeititon or stripped of medals if they don't sex true.
One of the most tragic recent cases is yet to reach a conclusion. Soundarajan, a 27-year-old Indian athlete, has had to endure public humiliation after she was stripped of her silver medal for the 800m at the Asian games in 2006. Soundarajan, who has lived her entire life as a woman, failed a gender test, which usually includes examinations by a gynaecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist and a genetic expert. The precise results of the test have not been made public, but it has been reported that the likely cause is a condition called Androgen insensitivity syndrome, where a person has the physical characteristics of a woman but whose genetic make-up includes a male chromosome.
One man and one woman. It's as simple as that?

Re: What is the 'Traditional Definition' of Marriage?
According to my memories of Gospel Doctrine class, marriage began in the Garden of Eden. One man married to one woman to multiply and replenish the Earth. That's where the marriage traditiona began, with Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.
And of course the meaty doctrine says that traditional marriage goes back before Adam and Eve to the pre-existence when our Heavenly Father was a mortal man and met his bride at a ward dance, and they were married in a temple for time and all eternity, and then they died of old age and went to the CK and were exhalted in the top level of the CK. They gave birth to us and we all waited for our turn on Earth. So traditional marriage has been around for the eternities.

Re: What is the 'Traditional Definition' of Marriage?
The people who use the term "traditional marriage" often are loosely talking about late Victorian era ideals about marriage. Ozzie and Harriet. They often have very naïve/incorrect views about the history of marriage as a social institution throughout different times and cultures, and tend to believe this arrangement is primeval.
