Conservative Fear

Here is an IM conversation that I received from a good friend of mine. He is pretty conservative, but is not by nature a conspiracy theorist. I can vouch for his complete sincerity (although, like me, he is prone to hyperbole). I have changed his name to protect his purported "innocence".
(12:11:52 PM) Steve: Heil Obama
(12:12:06 PM) Steve: the modern day Hitler
(12:12:37 PM) John: Hitler?
(12:12:43 PM) Steve: yes
(12:12:57 PM) Steve: You understand history
(12:13:02 PM) Steve: it is repeating itself
(12:13:06 PM) Steve: Hitler was elected
(12:13:19 PM) Steve: Just as obama was
(12:13:33 PM) John: That is your parallel?
(12:13:52 PM) Steve: Hitler then built up an army that reported directly to him
(12:13:58 PM) Steve: just as obama is proposing
(12:14:24 PM) John: What proposal? The President has been Commander and Chief since Washington.
(12:14:25 PM) Steve: His chief of staff is using terms such as when obama begins to "rule"
(12:14:51 PM) Steve: he is propasing a militia that is independant of the armed forces
(12:15:03 PM) John: You have gone off the deep end. Are you even listening to yourself?
(12:15:11 PM) John: I'm serious. You need help.
(12:15:22 PM) Steve: read what he says
(12:15:41 PM) Steve: those that have gone off the deep end are those that voted for him
(12:16:12 PM) Steve: when our rights are taken away don't cry to those of us who voted against him
(12:17:11 PM) Steve: oh but I forgot you believe in socialism
(12:17:19 PM) Steve: government run healthcare etc
Do you think this is just post election tub thumping, or is there a real wave of fear going through our conservative friends?

Tell your pal that Hitler's private army existed before he was elected. Also tell him that it [the SA a.k.a. "the Brownshirts"] numbered something like 2 mil, when the whole German army only numbered 100,000 due to the restrictions at the Treaty of Versailles. The Brownshirts were instrumental in the Nazi's taking power because of their bullyboy tactics, not to mention their ability to vote as a bloc. But their size in proportion to the German army proper is what allowed Hitler to take power. The US military is the most advanced army in the world, and it's nonsense to think that a civilian force could overtake the US the way the SA did in 1933 when Hitler was selected as Chancellor.
[A nugget of history, Hitler was selected as the "lesser of two evils" because they feared the Communists and socialists and thought they could control him. Good job Germans].
So the whole "Obama's building an army like Hitler did after he was elected" is nonsense.
It's fear. They aren't in power, and they don't like it. Conservatives have been in power more or less 20 of the past 28 years, and lets not forget they controlled Congress 6 of the 8 years of Clinton.
The reality is that the Republican party has been hijacked by the Religious Right and right now people fear economic troubles over social troubles, and thus the Democrats are in power. Right now they are a minority, and that is very scary for them. The Republicans are going to have to reevaluate who they are as a Party and come back toward the middle before they win again. Plus the Republicans are going to have to find some new [and credible] blood.
If anyone thinks Sarah Palin is going to be a viable candidate in 2012 then Obama will steamroll to victory again. Even 4 years of intensive study [yeah like she'll study!] aren't going to help her entirely because of her divisive personality. The polls told the tale at the end of the campaign, she was disliked by a majority of Americans.

No. It's definitely Conservative hysteria. I'm already hearing about it at work. The Christian fundies are freaking out.
The thing is when President Bush was (well, still is) in office, the Lefties were out of their fecking minds. Everything, and I mean everything, was Bush's doing. From felling the World Trade Centers to killing African babies... It was Bush. People tend to get deranged when their team isn't in power, and when it IS in power, they tend to get deranged.
Sucks. But it's true. Myopia is a biatch.

I don't think your friend is serious, and I don't think he is hearing this from someone else who thinks it is serious. Obama = Hitler? Oh come on! Your friend is a sore looser and he's lashing out. Tell him to think it over and come back with a decent, substantial criticism.

It's what everyone else said, just talking trash. The people I know who are into this kind of talk, who throw in politics between every sentence in real life, on the net, anywhere and everywhere, aren't the strongest people I know and wouldn't be behaving like that if they thought it was true, as it would put them in danger.

Conservatives defeated Marxism in the 20th century. You bet they would be fearful to see someone elected President who uses the same language and some of the same methodologies for the same policies.
It certainly not a "run away" type of fear though.

Way to set him straight! Obama is a Commie, not a Nazi.

Marxism is making a comeback if you haven't noticed...brought to you by those lovable conservatives in the Bush Administration.
