Peterson/Hamblin: "Backslappin Bros"

Got a little bored this morning while having a cup so I checked in over at MADB on my B-berry.
I see that the two self proclaimed scholars and celebs of that board are doing there usual self/cross promoting of each other. Kinda like seeing Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis again. "Dean sings the songs and Jerry gets the laughs". Or in this case Hamblin sings the praise and Peterson takes the bows!
Now we have the promotion of Peterson giving a talk on the Book of Mormon and DNA at the nationally acclaimed and recognized Olivewood bookstore for scholars! Adding to this whole comic relief is the role play of Peterson. I am assuming that this bookstore doubles as Provo's equivalent to LA's Comedy Shop. And the skit is simply priceless: A guy who proof reads text for grammar and typos lecturing on genetics and DNA!! Absolutely hilarious (albeit only in Provo). Please tell me he's gonna use the glasses and buck teeth for this one!!
Sadly, this is about the only place he could get an audience for another publication by FARMS. Much like the LDS apologetic promoted works of Clark & Sorenson on Book of Mormon historicity, his presentation will be ignored by any serious body of thinkers and have no exposure outside of his Provo buddies and those that Hamblin can promote to the site!
Desparation or comedy at its best? Tough to tell!
Can the pond get any smaller? I don't think the fish can get any bigger (and that is not a reference to physical size).
Can there really be that little to do in Provo that these types of self promoted events get attention?

There's something very strange about professors who give talks on subjects far outside their area of expertise, and then get accolades for it. I mean... it's not like genetics has anything to do with Arabic.

This is why I actually like Harmony. To quote my AA brothers and sisters, "She be keepin' it rea-ahl, yo."
Harmony,
Are you a NOM? Or... Social Mormon?

Over at the MADhouse, Dr. Peterson wrote:
Daniel Peterson wrote:I think we can agree that Amerindian DNA, which some hoped would prove the death of Mormonism, has instead proven to be a considerable disappointment to the critics.
How sad.
I admit that I haven't followed the discussions that much, but can we really agree that the critics' attitude to DNA issues has been one of "considerable disappointment"? I guess I was under the impression that critics were comfortable and confident in raising the DNA issue as a legitimate blow against LDS truth claims, but, like I said, I haven't been following the ongoing DNA discussions....
Someone set me straight.

Modern DNA evidence is a blow against the Church, but apologists liek DCP insist it isn't a blow against the Book of Mormon, because they have interpreted in a way so that it avoids refutation.
But at the very least, the DNA evidence goes to refute traditional Church teachings that date all the way back to Joseph Smith. For the critics, this is just as good as refuting the Book of Mormon. This is what DCP doesn't seem to understand. Not everyone, including the majority of LDS members, think the way modern LDS apologists have conditioned themselves to think.
Most LDS members don't make distinctions between official teachings and opinionated teachings, not when the teachers are the "Lord's annointed."

Well perhaps there is something even stranger about those who would actually come to hear him.
But this is Provo after all. Check your brain at the door and come hear some faith promoting nonsense from Jerry Lewis while he talks about something where he has absolutely no knowledge or background. Where else could the likes of Peterson and Hamblin pull this off? Hell, even the BYU campus is smart enough to not let him hold court there. Could he get an audience to listen to him pontificate about DNA anywhere other than some desperate Provo bookstore looking to shore up a dismal Christmas selling season???? Hardly. It's no different than Clark and Sorenson trying to get an audience on their supposed "scholarship works" supporting the Book of Mormon historicity. Only in Provo!
So the audience will include the "Peterson Lap Dogs" of LOAP, Nehor, Pahoran
[DELETED, PER TERRESTRIAL-SPECIFIC RULE #2--CKS].
The pond continues to shrink!
Thank God Peterson and Hamblin have Provo!!!
[Joey, I believe that, since names were named, the above fell under the purview of the new rule--cks]

I hire archaeologists and listen to what they tell me about DNA issues and Native Americans. I don't see it as any threat to the Book of Mormon unless one truly believes that there should be no east Asian influence.
Dr. Peterson has spoken in the Los Angeles area in various locations. He's great.

Big deal. I've spoken in various locations, too. Doesn't mean I'm an expert on genetics and DNA anymore than Daniel is an expert. He's an expert on Arabic. That doesn't make him an expert on genetics.

I'll be honest: The Olivewood Bookstore is a short drive away from my house, so I definitely would've gone to it had I known about it.
Why, you ask? This is for two reasons:
First, to get a handle on what sort of apologetics are
de rigeur these days. You can't do much better than getting it straight from "the horse's mouth," as they say. This is how I became updated on John Gee's latest thoughts
vis-a-vis the Book of Abraham.
Second, say what you want about Daniel Peterson, but the straight fact of the matter is that he's a highly talented and engaging public speaker. If I had known about it in advance, I probably would've attended no matter
what topic he was speaking on.
