Finally a Utah Judge sentencing a molester who used his position as trusted religious leader to find young victims. Utah leads the nation in child sexual molestation. Hope they all come before this Judge and get prosecuted to the maximum allowed. Only sad part of the sentencing is the Lawyer who made the asinine sentencing request isn't in Prison for criminal stupidity.

Despite defense request, judge sentences him to the max.
By Stephen Hunt The Salt Lake
A former Harrisville LDS bishop who sexually molested three Weber County sisters -- whom he frequently visited at home while their parents were away -- was sentenced Wednesday to prison for up to 30 years. Timothy O'Sean McCleve, 53, got the maximum sentence from 2nd District Judge Ernie Jones, who ordered two counts of second-degree felony sexual abuse of a child to run consecutively.
Defense attorney Randall Skeen asked for probation and a year in jail, citing McCleve's "extensive record of community service," as well a psycho-sexual evaluation indicating McCleve was "treatable and manageable within the community." But the judge rejected that option because of the number of victims. McCleve used his influence as a one-time bishop for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to visit the three sisters -- ages 6, 8 and 12 at the time of the abuse -- and molest them, according to charging documents.
Also, a 21-year-old woman came forward to say McCleve had abused her as a 6-year-old child.

This is a good thing. Anyone who abuses should be punished. One who abuses a position of trust is far worse then the worst.

This is so very true. It also demonstrates why the demise of Joseph Smith before his court trial proves to be a great tragedy.
Had Smith gone to trial, the Mormon church would obviously not exist today, most probably sparing these girls the tragic experience they will carry for the rest of their lives.

Damn that Pandora. Without her letting loose all that bad stuff, these girls wouldn't have suffered at all.
Joseph isn't responsible for the actions of this man. Neither is the church. He is evil, just as the Catholic priests who abused all those children are evil, just as any pedophile is evil. He abused his position for his own evil purposes.
It will be interesting to see if the children sue the church. They won in Oregon, but that was probably because the church caved rather than allow the state of Oregon access to their books (since the judge had ordered an examination of the books).

Um, no. If anything it would have been stronger. A martyr is more useful in jail than dead. Look at Timothy Leary.

Poor guy was just born too late, and in the wrong place.
Had he been born say 205 years ago in New England, perhaps he could have justified his behavior by claiming that god commanded that he do these things... while wearing long John undies that his wife had sewn in masonic symbols...

Actually you got it backwards. It was the death of Smith that gives rise to the ridiculous claims of "martyr" by the church and members today.
Had he gone to trial, we would have had the the same outcome as we have with Warren Jeffs today. Smith's fraud, adultery and perversion would have been formally and publically exposed in a very public trial rendering the continuance of the Mormon church most probably doubtful. It simply would not exist today.

The Mormons of the time would not have given a flying “F” about a court of "man". They knew in their hearts he talked to and spoke for god so I don't get what you are saying.
Its as if you believe that the Mormons of the time would have woken up and said "oh NO! Our infallible cult leader is fallible"!
NO! They would have tried to break him out.
Jeffs church now feels persecuted, they don't see him as anything but a mouthpiece for a screwed up idea of deity. There will be schizms, sure. But as a whole the FLDS will be stronger. When cults are persecuted they just get bigger and weirder. Look at The Peoples Temple for chrissake!
