Glenn Beck: Most Popular Christian Apologist in the West.

Post by _Ray A »

Well, according to Rommelator (a.k.a. Steve Smoot) writing on his Blog.

He went from a bitter, drug-addicted, bellicose radio host to becoming one of the most outspoken, and popular, apologists for Christianity in the Western Hemisphere.

I couldn't find any justification to believe this when doing a google search on Beck, but maybe some here will agree with Rommelator?

This is Beck's profile on Wiki. He comes from a troubled background, but Mormonism seems to have tamed him somewhat:

His early life was pitted with tragedies. His mother committed suicide when he was 13. One of his brothers also committed suicide. Another sibling reportedly had a fatal heart attack.......

Beck is a self-described reformed alcoholic and drug addict. In the aftermath of those three family tragedies, Beck said he used "Dr. Jack Daniels" and heavy drugs to cope. He and his first wife divorced amid his struggle with substance abuse. Beck cites the help of Alcoholics Anonymous in his sobriety, and he eventually converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which teaches against the consumption of alcohol.....

And here is his profile on Dickipedia.

Beck started out 2008 as the victim of a botched hemorrhoids operation when what should have been a routine outpatient procedure sent him to the hospital for five days. In the hospital, the serious painkillers he was on led him to contemplate suicide. A video of Beck, unshaven, disheveled, bleary-eyed and with his head propped up on a pillow as he told his fans about his disastrous health care experience, became a YouTube sensation in early 2008.

Beckisms:

* “Every night I get down on my knees and pray that Dennis Kucinich will burst into flames.” (2003)

* "I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it." (2005)

* "When I see a 9/11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh shut up' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining." (2005)

* “The only [Katrina victims] we’re seeing on television are the scumbags.” (2005)

* “Let me tell you something, there ain’t [nothing] better than looking at a hot, naked chick.” (2006)

(Note: I can't verify the accuracy of the above.)

Sounds like a great Christian apologist. But is he one of the "most outspoken and popular" Christian apologist in the Western hemisphere, as Rommelator suggests?

Edit: If you ask most Aussies, they wouldn't know Beck from a bar of soap. Have any of you heard of John Laws or Alan Jones?

Beck from the dead.

When viewing this, bear in mind Beck's comments:

* "When I see a 9/11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh shut up' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining." (2005)

* “The only [Katrina victims] we’re seeing on television are the scumbags.” (2005)

Note his video comment too:

"Being convinced....there was absolutely no reason to live....".

This was early 2008.

The question I have is, when is Beck going to start questioning his Mormon beliefs with the same scrutiny he applies to others?

By this logic, what shall we say then about those who reference Dickipedia?

But in direct answer to your comment, I'm simply applying LDS doctrine to daily life such as politics. It's quite clear that it's not possible to be left wing or USA Democrat and also believing LDS.

What parts of Democrat 'doctrine' are incompatible with Mormon doctrine?

(I am genuinely curious)

Interesting, I would have reversed the order.

I understand why the LDS love him, because he's one of them, and he cried on the air when Hinckley died, and he talks openly about his conversion. But the guy's an idiot. Whenever I tune in I can't take him for long.

In one of his great moments that I listened to, he was talking about people who said they were planning to choose "the lesser of two evils" in the Republican primary. He went off about how he chooses to avoid all evil in his life, completely missing (intentionally or otherwise, I don't know) the point that the phrase is not about actual evil, but about a pair of undesirable options.

He did something similar the other day when a caller voiced his opinion that everyone can't have a high-level job in our economy, no matter how educated we all are, by using the phrase "someone will still have to be working at McDonalds" as an example. Beck became outraged that someone would insult the "hard-working McDonalds employees."
