Evolution and homosexuality.

"how could gays evolve?" or a version thereof crops up now and again on the board, so I though you guys might be interested in this.
There are a number of sound reasons why homosexuality is compatible with evolution, and anyone who thinks it is not 'natural' has not spent much time observing free-range animals. But gayness is likely to be frequency dependent - with the percentage of gays maintained in balance with other factors effecting the species.
What happens when things get out of balance? This is sad and funny at the same time:

The radio reported this morning that Cherry has died, leaving Ben and Jerry the only two New Zealand blue ducks left in the UK.

A UK wildlife centre's hopes of breeding rare ducks native to New Zealand have been dashed - it turns out the males are gay.
New Zealand blue ducks Ben and Jerry were expected to find their live connection with female, Cherry, but she is not what the boys are looking for.
Arundel Wetland Centre in the south of England says the pair follow each other everywhere and put on elaborate mating displays, completely ignoring Cherry.
Ben and Jerry's behaviour could explain why there are only 600 blue ducks left in the world.
