That's you. Not everyone has to be like you, Joey. (thank God!)

It's kind of miraculous, isn't it?

I just got off the phone with the director of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science regarding a conference we're planning for Kuwait City in November. I leave for a lecture at Utah State in about ninety minutes, and I have bishop's interviews this evening, probably lasting until about midnight. Tomorrow morning, I teach the capstone course for Middle East Studies majors. Then I host the visiting Egyptian consul from San Francisco. Then I teach a seminar on the Qur’an, in Arabic.

And you? You count message board posts.

If you're in Logan, by the way, feel free to drop by, either for my lecture or for the book-signing beforehand:

It's an attractive flyer, by the way.

Joey, enumerator of message board posts, has taken his fascination with his topic to another thread, but seems curiously to have abandoned this one. I would like him, however, to note my response to him, above. So I'm topping this, for his edification. He's welcome to count both posts, of course.

Obviously I don't get here as often as those who have teaching jobs at BYU. Sorry for the un-timely response but frankly I'm not sure what the purpose of your post is other than an attempt to convince your employer that you really do something other than spend all day on message boards. I think the proof is in the post volume.

I hope those who it was intended for took notice.

Basta on!

Those who can, do. And Joey can count. So he does.

In fact, they call him "The Count," because he likes to count . . . things.

And now you can, too!

Incidentally, Joey doesn't appear to have made it to my lecture in Logan. Too bad.

Tomorrow afternoon, between the senior seminar for Middle East Studies majors and the Arabic Qur’an seminar that I'm teaching, I'll be meeting again with Dr. Sabiha Al Khemir about an exhibit of Islamic art that we're planning for BYU's Museum of Art. Dr. Al Khemir is the former director of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. Her work in Islamic art includes teaching in the British Museum; a consultancy for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; writing and presenting documentaries for Channel Four Television in London; and a recent exhibition at the Louvre entitled "From Cordoba to Samarqand: Masterpieces from the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha."

I do hope that Joey will be able to take time off from his busy schedule of counting my posts on his well-worn fingers and toes, and reporting the sums that he reaches, so that he can visit the exhibit when we open it. It will have all sorts of objects that he can count.

Maybe, in fact, the Count would like to start counting reviews of METI books in leading academic journals?

There's another such review (of a book that I edited, published in a series that I founded and direct), in the latest issue of the University of London's Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, one of the most prestigious journals in the field.

There are lots and lots of wonderful things for Joey to count!
