In fact, they call him "The Count," because he likes to count . . .
things. And now you can, too!http://store.sesameworkshop.org/product/show/34654Incidentally, Joey doesn't appear to have made it to my lecture in Logan. Too bad.
Tomorrow afternoon, between the senior seminar for Middle East Studies majors and the Arabic Qur’an seminar that I'm teaching, I'll be meeting again with Dr. Sabiha Al Khemir about an exhibit of Islamic art that we're planning for BYU's Museum of Art. Dr. Al Khemir is the former director of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. Her work in Islamic art includes teaching in the British Museum; a consultancy for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; writing and presenting documentaries for Channel Four Television in London; and a recent exhibition at the Louvre entitled "From Cordoba to Samarqand: Masterpieces from the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha."
I do hope that Joey will be able to take time off from his busy schedule of counting my posts on his well-worn fingers and toes, and reporting the sums that he reaches, so that he can visit the exhibit when we open it. It will have all
sorts of objects that he can count.
Maybe, in fact, the Count would like to start counting reviews of METI books in leading academic journals?
There's another such review (of a book that I edited, published in a series that I founded and direct), in the latest issue of the University of London's
Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, one of the most prestigious journals in the field.
There are lots and
lots of wonderful things for Joey to count!
Does anyone know what Peterson's point is here? He doesn't seem capable of explaining it directly.
by the way, if I had the time I could enumerate on all of the things that I do which allows me to get in four posts on message boards over the same period that BYU teachers can generate over four hundered. If I had the time.
Re-basta!

In the Islamic world, aren't there stiff penalties for a woman who becomes educated?

How can one possibly be the chief apologist for the LDS Church, without having their finger on the pulse of this forum or the faith-promoting forum?
It is amazing how much Dr. Peterson is able to accomplish each week.

Perhaps Shades didn't use the right words.
Perhaps "Islamic world" is a bit too broad. How about... in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, or Arabia, are women discouraged from getting an education?
Perhaps "stiff penalties" is a bit too broad also. How about... highly discouraged, and in many cases, denied access to an education, especially for poor women who cannot afford to go abroad?
Surely you understood Shades' question though. It's no use to make it sound like women are respected and have equal access to education in many Islamic cultures and countries. We simply know that is not true. The horror stories that haunt us about women in Afghanistan and Iraq cannot be refuted with a single "no".

If she were to take a walk in the border area of Afghanistan and Pakistan, wouldn't her head be forfeit?

No.
Did you see the 'or'? Because if I can prove it for a single country on that list, your "no" is not valid. A qualified "no" would have been a better answer, Daniel. Maybe you aren't quite the expert we've been led to believe is in our midst?
So... Afghanistan:
The repression of women is still prevalent in rural areas where many families still restrict their own mothers, daughters, wives and sisters from participation in public life. They are still forced into marriages and denied a basic education. Numerous school for girls have been burned down and little girls have even been poisoned to death for daring to go to school.
87 percent of Afghan women are illiterate.
30 percent of girls have access to education in Afghanistan.

http://www.afghan-web.com/woman/17 February 2009: Women's education has been severely compromised in Afghanistan as a resurgent Taliban has practised a policy of intimidation of female students. Women, who make up a significant proportion of Afghanistan's population, have been killed, burned and threatened for attending school. Many teachers have been executed in remote villages by the Taliban during the latest resurgence
