In Runtu's excellent post about learning from apologetics, he brought up the alt.religion.Mormon newsgroup. I used to enjoy lurking there many years ago (but never posted), and learned quite a lot. I saved some of the best exchanges, but that drive crashed, and that computer is long gone.

What I'm wondering is who here used to post there? He mentioned a few of those that I remember, such as Randy Jordan and Charles Dowis. I also remember Ray A, I believe, and the unforgettable Art Bullah. If you were a poster there, and you don't mind saying so, what was your handle there?

There were a couple of very entertaining posters, one of whom I think called himself R. L. Measures, and the other I don't recall. Another one I liked was a woman from Arizona(?) who had a lot of experience with archaeology or something similar (three-letter name I think?). Anybody remember them?

I don't remember anyone with a Pahoran posting style. What name did he use there?

Hmmm. There was Craig Harman, whom I still hear from occasionally. The Pahoran-like poster was Russell C. McGregor. There was a convert from OK named Fawn who smoked clove cigarettes (I always liked her). RL Measures had a critical web site that was pretty well-researched, I thought.

David Bowie and Yeechang Lee were the quintessential Internet Mormons.

A couple of those ring a bell. I must have missed McGregor. As I said, I don't recall that posting style (you may have misread that line above).

I stopped reading it when my ISP dropped newsgroups from their servers. The web interface was too slow and annoying.

By the way, I think the woman I referred to may have been Jan.

No, krose. I was coming through (or about to come through) the portal to the intellectual meat grinder that was 2think around that time. From time to time, Randy J. posts a link to alt religion and that's how I came to access it. I found it interesting to "look back" at some of the apologists that I later became familiar with on Z.

Well, well. I had no idea the group was still going over on Google Groups, with Manning and Evenson and others still posting. I assumed that it had died. My mistake.

It's certainly not what it used to be several years ago, though.

I didn't actually start posting until July 2000. The first board I posted on was Jim Radford's LDS Internet. That board was like this was originally - virtually unmoderated and a free for all. It did eventually become very heated, and I spent about half of my time there defending my view that the Book of Mormon most likely wasn't historical. Even nine years ago this topic was very sensitive for LDS.

Apart from being censored by RFM for a time, I've only ever been banned from LDS boards. I was banned from ZLMB (for life), By Common Consent, and in my recent return to MAD I got suspended (for a day) on the first day after less than 20 posts.
