General Conference... anything new?

Post by _truth dancer »

Most of my life I eagerly anticipated GC waiting to hear the latest direction from the Savior. I listened to each and every session, took notes, and made a list of ways I could follow the teachings of Christ.

Not much has changed over the years regarding GC. The talks are comprised of the same top ten topics; paying tithing, attending the temple, supporting the priesthood, honoring Joseph Smith, women staying in their place, the need for more missionary work, preparing for the last days, obeying and following the leaders, remaining faithful, reading scriptures.

Typically there is a woman or two who will speak about the importance and value of women.

Do you think there will be anything new this year? New programs? New advice? New opinions? New direction? New ideas?

Anything specific that the leaders of the LDS church will address? The economic crisis? The numbers of people leaving the church?

I'm guessing there will be a talk to address the Prop 8 issue and the "win" for the family and I did hear there is going to be more accurate disclosure of member numbers... we'll see.

What do you think?

With all due respect, truth dancer, why make a post asking questions to which you already know all the answers?

What do previous trends tell you?

Anything specific that the leaders of the LDS church will address? The economic crisis?

Yes. They'll say that the only way to remain financially secure is to pay a faithful tithe.

The numbers of people leaving the church?

I can't believe you asked that.

I'm guessing there will be a talk to address the Prop 8 issue and the "win" for the family . . .

Perhaps.

. . . and I did hear there is going to be more accurate disclosure of member numbers.

Mark my words, you heard wrong.

What do you think?

I think you know the answers to each of your questions just as well as the rest of us do.

I'm pretty sure there will be a few talks addressing the importance of staying out of debt and paying tithing. I don't imagine them going much deeper than that.

I expect the answers to your questions are best found in the principle that "People who are prepared for conference get the most out of it." Some people find conference to be the same old thing year after year, while others find that each conference is brimming with inspired counsel that seems like it was written just for them and their current situation in life.

All I can say is that if I were in charge, I wouldn't change a thing, since whatever they're doing really seems to be working.

There will be a new apostle called. My expectations is he will be very similar to those already called.

I do not think we will hear anything really new or stunning though I expect to hear some about the economy, putting your finances in order, getting out of debt, etc. Not new stuff really.

I wonder if we'll hear more about provident living, saving more, getting our year's supply, serving our neighbors, that sort of thing.

My ward has really stepped up the year's supply thing this year. And we're having a square foot gardening seminar tomorrow night (I might actually attend, as that sounds like something I'd enjoy). We're also doing more service, it seems like. We have 5 people in the ward that are in treatment for cancer, so the Relief Society is really working overtime.

HE?? It is very sexist of you to assume that the next apostle God calls will be a man. Why do people always assume that god only wants men to be apostles and prophets?

When will they restore casting lots as a way of choosing an apostle.

GC is very predictable. The church needs some new material. At the same time, I agree with cinepro. whatever they're doing works. It's like a Rocky sequel. We all know the plot before we enter the theater, but we still can't wait to see it.

Until God is able to open the minds of the Brethren, there will be no women apostles. Apostle is a priesthood calling; no priesthood, no priesthood calling.

Good try, though.
