Bible Construction

Post by _KimberlyAnn »

I enjoy a well-written book, but I love a well-written and well-bound book. Good paper, nice type, even margins--all those things make a book more than just a literary work of art. A well-made book is pleasing in so many ways.

Frankly, I find parts of the Bible repulsive. Nevertheless, I have quite an affection for Bibles that are well made. Is that weird?

Luckily, I've found a couple of nice new and used Bibles lately with calfskin covers and lining and good, sewn binding. I've been looking for an ESV worthy of purchase, but until recently all that I've found have been lacking in physical beauty. Vain, I know. I bought a cheap ESV a few years ago, but now Cambridge has an ESV available in goatskin. But I've never owned a book covered in goatskin. Calfskin, yes, but not goatskin.

Does anyone know if goatskin is equal in quality to calfskin? I can't get my hands on one of the newer ESV's, so I must order online. It's hard to know what I'm getting for my money.

Here it is: Cambridge Goatskin ESV

I know it's a long shot, but perhaps a reader here on MDB may be familiar with goatskin covered books and be able to give me some advice.

Also, right before I left the Mormon church, I bought the nicest Quad available. Now I use it only if I need to look up something for a post here or there. And I don't write in my best Bibles. Ever. Cheap books for scribbling. Fine books for touching and smelling and admiring. :)

If you dare to write in any book I shall take out a contract on you forthwith.

Cease and desist.

I confess I can't cease or desist the habit. If it is my book I am very apt to scribble in it. My wife is on your side and she can hurt me in ways that your contract will never be able to. So if that threat doesn't stop me I doubt your contract will have any effect on me.

PS My only experience with goatskin had to do with wine and not books.
I think it would be morally right to lie about your religion to edit the article favorably.

I've been twice baked, too, at times.

KA?
I am guessing a Kindel as little appeal to you..

I can't decide if I like the idea or not.
A neighbor has one and watching him read it just seems odd..
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

I don't doubt you, Chap!

I was taught by my parents never to write in books and have taught my daughters the same thing, but when I was a young girl attending early morning seminary at my LDS ward building, the teacher encouraged us to mark in our scriptures. I did mark in mine, though I stopped short of coloring the entire thing in various shades of liquid highlighter. I still have that same old Quad I once used in high school, marred by my scribbles. It's useless, but I haven't been able to part with it.

So you've nothing to add about goatskin? I think I will just get on with it and order the book. If it's not what I'm hoping for, it's not a big deal. I can think of worse ways to waste money.

No, TAK, a Kindle holds no appeal for me. I need to hold a book in my hands.

If you're a techie type, I say go for it.

PS. Pokatator, you're fine as a potato, but you'll make even better French fries. It's all good.

Well ain't you da dandy!? From what era? Who/what rigid, frigid Victorian School marm beat such senslessness into yer uptight -- retentive little soul??

I suppose it depends upon what one reads and if there is anything worth remembering or turning back to??? Romance, Western Fictions? Biographies, History, etc....
I seldom read without a pen/pencil in hand. When I pick up a used book that has been noted and underlined I am immediately taken, as it suggests it was well read with interest. Sort of like the feel of real antique furniture, leather or silverwear that has been spirituaized by the laying on of countless unknown hands... Aaannnnnnnnywayyyyyyy...
