Ok, this is funny:

The Daily Universe took the extraordinary step Monday of re-calling all its 18,500 copies from newsstands around campus and the community to reprint the entire 14-page issue due to a typographical error on the front page.

A spelling error appeared in a photo caption in which the word “apostle” was rendered as “apostate.” In referring to activities at the General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints last weekend, the caption read in part, “Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostates and other general authorities raise their hands in a sustaining vote. . . .”

So, did the caption editor get excommunicated or merely expelled?

In any event, the originals are obviously collector's items now. I wonder how much one will go for on eBay?

I always like to wake properly up with a good lung-busting laugh, and this one didn't let me down:

Apostles, not apostates: BYU paper's ungodly typo.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Thousands of issues of Brigham Young University's student newspaper were pulled from newsstands because a front-page photo caption misidentified leaders of the Mormon church as apostates instead of apostles.....

The caption called the group the "Quorum of the Twelve Apostates." The mistake happened when a copy editor ran a computer spell check and apostate was suggested as the replacement for a misspelling of apostle.

"Unfortunately that's the one she clicked on," said Rich Evans, the paper's editorial manager. "It still should have been caught by two more levels of review after that, but again with deadline looming, the worst possible thing happened."

The typo was an honest mistake, said Carri Jenkins, spokeswoman for church-owned BYU. She said most of the 18,000 copies of the student paper were retrieved Monday morning and replaced with 10,000 corrected copies later in the day.....

No disrespect to church leaders was intended, Brad Rawlins, chairman of the school's communications department, said in a statement.

LOL. I'm still killing myself laughing. But come to think of it, maybe there should be a Quorum of Twelve Apostates?

I nominate Dr. Shades as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostates.

(by the way, Chris, I got the story from a tip off at Meridian, and didn't realise you had blogged about it.)

DID I FREAKIN' CALL IT OR DIDN'T I??

There are, not one, but TWO eBay auctions for this online at present. One of them has been bid on 14 times so far, up to $102.51!

Luckily both auctions include a helpful photo:

Well, looks like it's all over. Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that the editor is getting excommunicated for "apostasy", and the two proof-readers are getting disfellowshipped. Apparently their Church Courts were "expedited". And all three are out of BYU. :surprised:
