Polygamy--What if...

I thought this might be an interesting topic of discussion.

What if...The laws on the books with polygamy were relaxed and polygamy was legal.

At this point, what if President Monson called a special meeting and asked the Saints to begin practicing plural marriage again?

This question is primarily for the active LDS folks.

How would you react? Would you be eager to participate? How would you counsel your daughters?

My answer would be: No... and HELL NO! If my husband disagreed, we'd meet in a judge's chambers and split our assets, because there is no way on earth that I'd put up with that crap.

And as for my children, I'd explain all I know about Joseph Smith... and then let them make their own decision. Heck, I've got one daughter who is 32 and still not married. No way in hell she'd take on being a 2nd wife.

I still go to church - but sit in the back row and never say anything in Sunday School.

If the church again encouraged the practice of polygamy I believe my husband would embrace the doctrine with gusto.

I would RUN!!!!! And take my children with me. I would tell them everything I have learned about the church in the last 2 years.

First of all, it negates the Proclamation of the family. It places the woman on unequal ground with the man.

My TBM wife and many other women would declare war against the suits. It would bring new meaning to the word "relief society". The women (and honorable men) would destroy their craft once and for all. It's a different world now. Women know they have rights and men have no legal power over them.

Just as Moroni declared to Zerahemnah, "we will end the conflict".

Most Mormon women only tolerate the principle of polygamy because they do not understand the immoral way in which it was perpetrated.

No faithful woman (or respectable man) would intentionally desire to live in such a way as to contract or spread diseases either.

Any married man of character would not entertain the idea against his wife.

This is not how it would happen. Judging from history, church leaders would approach women in secret and marry them in secret.

How do you know they're not?

This would be such a headache to the Church that they would never bring it back. If you read through the history of early Utah it quickly becomes clear that it never really worked in the first place. I think, at least in part, this is the reason the Church fights for "traditional" marriage so hard these days. It does not want the polygamy door reopened and they can plausibly blame it on the government today. Bringing it back would destroy the the Church in a cloud of petty sexual rivalry and broken families.

What would happen if the LDS church reinstated earthly polygamy?

Many would leave the church, some would stay.

Those who went along with it would consider themselves the most righteous; you know, followers of the prophet and all that.

This would be just another example of how Christ separates the wheat from the tares; proof of the last days.

Those that would not go along with it would be considered less valiant and either too weak to follow the prophet or so worldly that they can't see the light.

Just like in the early days of the church.

Again you guys are using presentism to answer this question. And of course it is a resounding no. But if polygamy were reinstated the reasons for it would be clear and many would understand and stay in the church. You guys really need to use your imagination on this one and understand if God wants to reinstate polygamy his reasons would be clear.

It also seems to me that many on this forum have a fetish about polygamy. Perhaps you have a hidden desire to experience it.
