Ritner said:
... I am the one who rejected further participation in Gee’s work, and I signaled many errors in his work as a reason.
If Ritner was telling the truth when he wrote that, it is just about compatible with the version you prefer (taking him as having said "I'm not going to go to the trouble of staying on Gee's committee after I leave Yale, because I think his work is no good"). But only just, I'd say.
Indeed. What I see in this is an angry Ritner emphasizing an aspect of his decision not to work with Gee in retaliation for the phony rumors Mopologists were spreading. Gee thanks Ritner in the Introduction to his dissertation. In other words, those errors were noted and presumably corrected by Gee. At the time the corrections were delivered, they were probably delivered in a neutral or helpful spirit. When Ritner discovers the Mormon rumor mill's version of things, he fires back by leaning on the unfavorable but unspoken (at the time) reason: "I dumped you because, frankly, you weren't that good."

The student newspaper of the University of Chicago had a
small write-up about Dr. Ritner. It mentions his work with Book of Abraham claims.

During the final years of his life, Ritner was always accompanied by his dog Sheshonq, named after a pharaoh of the 22nd Dynasty of Egypt. Every Halloween, Ritner and Sheshonq came to class in matching mummy or pharaoh costumes.
This made my innards smile.

Oh that missing king's name!
Sorry to say there is no name given in the characters above the head. Nobody can say the hieroglyphs above the head are missing (Missing Hieroglyph Theory) because they are all there, fair and square. Nobody can say the hieroglyphs above the head were forever burned in the Chicago fire because we have a FACSIMILE copy of those very hieroglyphs that were faithfully copied from the lost vignette into the Facsimile which Smith formerly published.
Isn't that right, John Gee? The writing does not represent a king's name in any way, shape, or form. Joseph Smith was wrong, wrong, wrong. Period. AMEN, and I say that in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
So, kiss my ass, John Gee! And you can kiss Philo Sofee's ass too. And kiss RFM's as well.
Shulem is back!

Though the hypocephalus on which Facsimile 2 was based did originally belong to a man named Sheshonq.
