Quotable Quotes and Identification.

Post by _Ray A »

I know this may seem like trivia, but it sort of annoys me (don't fuss, you can ignore me since you have your "free" agency).

When replying to a post it makes it much easier for the reader to identify who you're quoting by including the person's name in the quote. I'm picking this example at random:

I'm not sure why posters choose this:

The California Supreme Court is expected to uphold Prop 8 but allow the 18000 marriages that have been performed to remain legal.

Over this:

Is there a reason for this? I'm not singling out MDB either, as it also happens on MAD quite a lot. It means that readers don't have a clue who you're quoting, unless they go back and try to match the quote with a poster. This can lead a reader to sometimes ignore a response (since they wouldn't know who wrote what is being replied to, nor the context of the reply), unless they know who is being quoted. If a name is included in the quote reply, a reader who may not have been following the whole conversation can easily go back to the original quote to verify context. I understand, you know who you're quoting and replying to, but we don't always know.

Any chance of making it a little easier for all of us?

Well on hearing my accent various guesses have been: Welsh, Irish, English, American, Canadian, South African - never Australian. In 35 years only one person has picked my accent. I could lay $100,000 on a table for anyone who can pick it, and feel comfortable no one would.

by the way, I agree with you on the quotes deal. I just can't keep up sometimes.

The last day I was in Oz, a local yelled at me to get on me bike and go back to America. I was bummed. I thought I had assimulated the accent quite well. Hmmph. After getting home, anyone that didn't know me would ask where I was from. Go figure. I eventually re-aquired my "r's".

LOL. Sorry but I can't help it. There are lots of Americans here and I haven't talked to one yet who doesn't like it.

Yes, it's those distinguishable "r's" that set you apart. Next time you visit just put on a blue vest with shorts and thongs (a can of beer in the hand would help too) and concentrate on eliminating those "r's" again. She'll be right, mate.
