It causes more people to become atheist than the worst dictatorships, crimes, and natural disasters in all of human history. Religion has been a sort of insurance policy that there is no God. Because if "God" is so twisted, devious and hypocritical as to "ordain as a prophet" a man who would ask his male followers to âFâ their wives, then I don't blame anyone for believing that God doesn't exist.
I would be atheist myself if I didn't see beyond this con. Religions present a God who is totally foreign to me. Glorified male APES pretending to speak for God.

I would consider this to be a good thing about religion (if it were true that it caused people to become atheists - I think it may in a few cases, but I don't think it's the norm).
I was agnostic for many years after leaving the church. I just didn't think you could prove it either way, and it took a long time to let the idea go. But slowly, I realized that just because I couldn't prove he didn't exist was a good reason to give the idea any more credence than fairies or ghosts or anything else supernatural.
I'd love it if there were a loving god; I'd love to believe that there's more life after this one, but that's my heart talking, not my head. I try very hard not to give in to wishful thinking when assessing what's real and what isn't.

But Schmo, listening to our hearts is what makes us human. Why do you love your family? What is love? Is love your head...or your heart talking?

Actually, I would suggest that listening to our hearts (which is to say, responding to our emotions) is a throwback to when we didn't have this large frontal lobe/cerebral cortex, and that listening to our head is what really sets us apart as humans.
But I'm not disputing that our hearts might have something to tell us; it's just that if there's a conflict between what my heart says and what my head says, I try to let my head win.
In the case of my family, there is no such conflict. Both my heart and my head tell me I love them.
But then, I believe that love is more a verb than a noun. Loving is doing things more than it's a feeling. It's easy to do stuff for someone when you feel great affection for them; it's when I do things for my family when I don't particularly
feel loving that I'm being the most loving. And it's the doing of things for them that provide concrete empirical evidence that I love them.
;)

Most people don't admit it when they have no substantive argument, so kudos to you for your honesty, LifeOnaPlate.

You could be right. The scriptures teach this principle....
Matthew 13:18-23
2 Nephi 2:11
What is hang fired bad about being an atheist? I guess I fell for the "con" after leaving the church and I feel fine!
Your posters appear to erroneously suppose that religion and science can't mix.

One of the great forces of the Universe.
In fact, the primary phenomena of a Unified Field explanation
of existence -- if some genius can ever get around to stating it.
Or, maybe all we need to do is to gaze into the starry skies on a
moonless night -- or into a microscope at a drop of pond water.
If we were fish, Love would be the ocean we swim in.
Too bad that some people never experience that truth.
