The Mormon Church's version of simony
Simony
Back when I was eighteen and still believed in Mormonism (shudder), I received a life insurance payment from a departed loved one. I was advised that, in order to become an elder in the "Melchizedek Priesthood," I had to pay 10% of the amount, which I cheerfully did after some initial hesitation. (I distinctly recall the teller's surprise when I asked for the cashier's check to be made out to the LDS Church and did not care for a receipt.) Subsequently, I received the "Melchizedek Priesthood." That is simony. (I had to pay to play.)
Incidentally, I don't fault my Mormon bishop (a nice, humble man) because he was a victim of Joseph Smith's deception, just as much as I was. Also, while I got off easy in terms of total monies paid to Joseph Smith's false church, it still bothers me because someone I loved very much had to die for that money to be paid out.

Who advised you to do that?

None but I would have no problem giving to the right church.

Maybe you should go out into the grove and pray about it.
Alternately, you could think about what a world without God would look like, and recognize that it looks like the one we live in.

There is no need, since I have already decided that no extant church is the right church.

I don't think so.
