Faith promoting lies

The five military men who agreed on signs of Jesus true church and years later discovered all had joined LDS.
Eye of the Needle is a small gate all Camels had to pass through on their knees to get trade items into the city.
Paul Dunns best friend died in his arms in 'the war'.

Just a few that turn out to be lies yet have people repeating them over and over... even when many know they are lies.

What others can folks come up with? I agree with an earlier poster that you don't convince people you have the truth by telling them lies.

Hmmmmm. I still thought that one was true. There goes my testimony. =)

The mother lie of them all:

"I know the church is true."

That one actually came from a medieval churchman to help his wealthy congregation feel good about it. Unfortunately the Apostles never heard of that gate so they were astonished at what he said.

There have also been some pretty good urban legends, one dealing with Mormons in iraq war was good.

3 Nephite stories are always heart warmers

There were still apostles living in Medieval times?

Polygamy was started because persecution and the pioneer trek killed off so many Mormon men.

Here are three "faith-promoting lies" that I encounter fairly frequently:

The witnesses to the Book of Mormon denied their testimonies.

The witnesses to the Book of Mormon never claimed to have seen the plates with their physical eyes, nor to have handled them with their physical hands.

There is absolutely no evidence for the claims of Mormonism.

Breedum Young is a fictional character who inhabits the fevered nightmares of some anti-Mormons.

Brigham Young, though, was a real person and he really didn't have anything to do with the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

Which would make TAK's assertion one of the "faith denigrating lies" that everyone knows is false but still gets bandied about incessantly. I would then also have to agree with zz that you don't convince someone that you have the truth by telling them lies. TAK doesn't care that it's a lie, though. He's got a testimony that it's true even though all the evidence shows it's not.
