Unprecedented Event in Mormon Utah

Post by _John Waite »

I understand that all church meetings were canceled today in Utah. Instead, members were invited to attend one of two different sessions for the dedicatoin of the Oquirh (sp?) Mountain Temple. But to attend the dedication, you had to have a current temple reccommend, or (for children and teens) an equivalent authorization from the bishop.

This means that only the "worthy" members of the church were able to attend today's meetings. All others were excluded from any worship activities on this particular sabbath day.

I don't live in Utah, so I wasn't affected by any of this. But I have to admit that I find the whole affair just a bit troubling. I'm not sure why. I guess it's because it's so unprecedented to cancel all meetings. And the fact that only the "worthy" were asked to join together today makes it seem a little too exclusive for my tastes.

I also heard some rumors of people speculating that something "really special" was going to be happening during these exclusive meetings of the worthy. But I haven't heard back yet about whether or not anything unusual went on. Anyone on this board attend the dedications meetings today? Should we expect an exodus back to Missouri beignning tomorrow morning?

I think the best you can hope for is that white faced temple bystander steals the black faced Moroni.

I have no doubt it was "really special". Translation = boring as hell.

This troubles you?

My girlfriend's father was a bishop and their family was some of the few let into the temple. I'll try to get it out of her.

In the whole freakin' state?

Wow. Over a million members, free all day long on a Sunday. The mind just boggles.

Are they crazy cancelling church meetings on a Sunday when Brother Steve Young isn't playing football on TV?

Okay here is how the conversation went.

"I heard there was something special for you guys that were allowed in the temple at the dedication today."

"Yeah. It was amazing. What did you hear it was?"

"I can't tell cause its a secret and you might be trying to trick me."

"Me too"

So I kicked the dog.

It was a glorious day for all of the Chuck-a Rama's in Utah

No one was excluded from any worshipping. The responsibility for providing the worship framework of today simply fell to the individual.

In the whole freakin' state?

As well as stakes in surrounding states. This also happened in March for the Draper temple. Since our family had already attended the Draper dedication, we took the whole day off, jack Mormon that I am.
