I'll Be There

Post by _KimberlyAnn »

The OU/BYU game at the new Texas Stadium has been sold out for so long, I never once considered going. I've been planning a little game day party at my house, but this past Sunday I got a surprise gift: A Trip to See The Game! HA!

I'll be there, in person, to taunt* the losing BYU Cougars. I'm not all bad, though. I'll lift my Bud (that's the only beer they sell there) in honor of BYU's valiant, yet ineffective effort.

The Cougars are having their traditional pre-game fireside in, I think, Richardson Texas. Oddly enough, tickets are required, though I've no idea how those might be obtained. At any rate, a fireside won't help. The Three Nephites won't do them any good. Even 8lb, 6oz Newborn Infant Jesus won't prevent my Sooners from trouncing BYU.

Some BYU fans are grousing over the fact that liquor will be served during the game. I don't see why that matters, but it apparently does, at least to some folks. They're also grousing about this: BYU is being paid roughly half of what OU is being paid to play the game. THAT is a legitimate beef. I don't understand the payment system, but BYU must have agreed to the terms.

At any rate, I'll be there.

I used to be a Mormon, but I was never a BYU fan. The Sooners are going to send the Cougars slinking, tails tucked, all the way back to Provo.

Happy,

KA

*I'm quite civil at football games. I taunt in the politest way.

What the Hell is a "sooner," and what does a "sooner" mascot dress up as?

A sooner is a settler that jumped the legal opening of OK. They got all the good spot before the law abiding morons came over. This is the primary reason OK is vastly more intelligent than Texas. Except Tulsa.

A Sooner is an Oklahoma University football player who is about to kick Cougar tail.

This is the mascot, Sooner Schooner:

The wagon is pulled onto the field at the start of each game and at every touchdown.

I'll be Jumpin' Around Saturday. I can't wait!

So the mascot is a covered wagon??

Hi KimberlyAnn,

Speaking about the new Texas Stadium at Dallas.

Here are Part of two News Articles about the Texas Stadium at Dallas:

Dallas Cowboys' video board at new stadium is in punters' line of fire

In the stadium's football debut, an exhibition game punt hits the underside of the huge screen and the ball is ruled dead. Jerry Jones doesn't see a problem. Titans Coach Jeff Fisher begs to differ.

The Dallas Cowboys were hoping to raise the roof Friday when they unveiled their new stadium.

Turns out, they might have to raise the video board, which is in the line of fire for punts. Or the league could be forced to examine its rules.

"It's something we're going to have to look at in the next week," Mike Pereira, the NFL's director of officiating, told The Times on Saturday. "We need to see if there's anything further we can do to make sure there's equity involved if it happens again."

The problem: In the third quarter of Friday night's exhibition game against Tennessee -- the first football game in Dallas' $1.2-billion palace -- a punt by the Titans' A.J. Trapasso struck the underside of the gigantic video screen, hanging 90 feet above the field and stretching from one 20-yard line to the other.

The ball bounced straight down and was ruled dead, meaning the down had to be replayed. And the plunking wasn't surprising, seeing as second-stringer Trapasso hit the video board at least three times during warmups, and starter Craig Hentrich nailed it a dozen more.

Afterward, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he does not plan to move the board higher from the stadium floor (although reportedly it is being temporarily raised by 25 feet in October to accommodate the stage for a U2 concert).

"That's not the point," Jones told the Dallas Morning News after the game. "How high is high if somebody just wants to sit there and kick the ball straight up?"

But Titans Coach Jeff Fisher, co-chairman of the competition committee, said he considers it a problem, one complicated by the fact coaches will have to keep their red challenge flags at the ready because officials are watching for illegal blocks and not the arc of the ball.

"It's an issue, yeah," Fisher told reporters. "I'm sure the Cowboys or the league will tell you, I shouldn't have to throw the flag out there because [officials] didn't see the ball hit the scoreboard. Now, it's not necessarily their responsibility. Once a fair catch signal is given, then there are no eyes on the ball anymore. So they don't see it. So something has to get worked out. It can become a problem."

Pereira said it's entirely possible that a team trying to protect a lead could run time off the clock by intentionally punting the ball into the video board and getting a do-over. He said there is no rule for putting time back on the clock in that situation.

"We haven't talked at all about time being put on the clock," he said. "The only thing we've talked about really is the do-over of the play. We've never talked about resetting the clock back to where it was. That's obviously something we're going to have to talk about. And that may be what we arrive at.

"I would say that it's a big enough issue that we're going to have to address it with the competition committee here probably sometime this week to figure out what direction we want to go."

NFL says Dallas Cowboys can keep video board height as is - for now

12:00 AM CDT on Saturday, August 29, 2009

By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News
tarcher@dallasnews.com

IRVING – For now, the digital video board inside Cowboys Stadium will stay at 90 feet above the field.

The NFL on Friday elected not to make the team raise the center-hung board despite calls for it from the Competition Committee after the $40 million screen became one of the league's hottest topics for a week.

In a memo sent to every team, Commissioner Roger Goodell said if a punt hits the board – or a guide wire, sky cam or any other object at any stadium – the down will be replayed, just as the rule stated before a punt by Tennessee's A.J. Trapasso nailed the board a week ago in the first football game at the $1.15 billion stadium in Arlington.

...

The Cowboys will raise and disconnect the board for the Oct. 12 U2 concert in order to fit the rock band's stage. For the last month the team has been installing equipment that will allow the board to be lowered for future special events.

The NFL decision was a win for Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones. He was not available for comment Friday but has consistently said that the board, which is higher than the 85-foot minimum directed by the NFL, did not need to be raised. Jones said that in a regular-season game, the height would not be a factor because punters kick toward the sidelines to help the coverage team.

The Cowboys believe Trapasso was attempting to hit the board after he and starting punter Craig Hentrich hit it in pre-game warmups. Cowboys punter Mat McBriar has said the video board would not affect him.

McBriar, who has one of the strongest legs in the NFL, didn't hit the board against Tennessee or in Thursday's practice at the stadium.

"It hasn't been a problem for me yet, so I'm not really concerned by it," McBriar said. "I'm sure guys who come in for the first time are going to be, No. 1, awestruck by the building, and then they'll see the screen. I don't foresee it being a problem for myself. I can't talk for other guys."

The league amended its replay rules because of the board, allowing the replay official to stop play at any point in the game if he believes the board was struck by a punt. Normally the replay official has the final say only in the last two minutes of each half. Plus, coaches will be able to use a replay challenge if they believe the board was hit.

If the down is replayed, the game clock will be reset to the time remaining when the snap occurred and all penalties will be disregarded, except personal fouls, which will be administered before the snap.

Two of the NFL's top punters – San Diego's Mike Scifres and Oakland's Shane Lechler – visit Cowboys Stadium this season. McBriar said either could hit the board.

"If you hit it every time out there, I don't think you want your cover guys running down there 10 times," McBriar said. "You're just going to have to kick around it somehow. Relatively it doesn't take a whole lot of room up width-wise. Sure it goes 60 yards [long], but it barely covers hash to hash.

"There are ways around it. If you tell me don't hit it, I won't hit it."

I've been living in Dallas since 1986 and ain't seen a game of any kind yet. I did however go to two Dallas Cowboy super bowl parades (back to back) which were held in town while I was working in downtown Dallas. One of them I watched from a roof terrace.

The OU celebrations are a bit loud and roudy. Been to the Cotton bowl many times, many Texas State Fairs! The Texas State Fair kicks ass!

Ain't no place like Texas! Dallas is a great place to live.
