If your nose was out of my business, you wouldn't feel compelled to comment on my business, now would you?

How is commenting on your business interfering with said business. Parent how you see fit. I have no doubt you will do fine. I would do it a different way, but I have my own kids to raise, right? I hope all children everywhere will have the ability to see crap for crap and when they are of age, beyond the point where they are accountable for their own selves, to leave the Church. That includes your children and every other Mormling in the world. Why is that over any line, I don't know.

Edited to add - by the way Nyal, when do you intend to answer my question about what, exactly, do you mean by the phrase "Die In A Fire"?

I mean I would like you to fall in love with the fire that is burning in your fireplace. I want you to make it a dinner, pour some wine, play some music and sit down with it. When your moment arrives, I want you to make a move on it. Do the old reach around yawn trick. Hold it. Kiss it. Spend the night wrapped in a hot ball of passion. No regrets in the morning.

Figuratively, of course.

Oh, come on. Anyone who's been a member of the church knows that faithful LDS hope that members of any and all other religions will convert to the One True Church, and that includes hoping children will do so when they grow up. Planting seeds and all that. Really, if the church were true, that would be the best thing to hope for for any person. So why pretend otherwise? Why pretend that LDS have a deep respect for family traditions in any other religion when it comes to hoping for converts? It was well known that converts in France were likely disappointing and upsetting their Catholic families, but that was considered a necessary sacrifice, and even a badge of honor of some sort.

I just hope your children grow up to be happy and healthy...whatever their belief system...that okay with you?

ttribe, are you seriously going to pretend that Mormons are not profusely hoping and praying that everyone the Elders encounter, "reject the faith of their parents" in favor of Mormonism? At least GP was upfront and honest. You do yourself no credit to pretend that you and your faith only care about the mental, physical well being of other non-LDS children... and NOTHING MORE. You also hope and prayer for their conversion. How many times have you donated or been involved in group prayer to boost the missionary success?

Perhaps a more pertinent question would be to ask me the number of times that I've prayed that other people's minor children would break the shackles of their parents and reject their parents' beliefs. That would definitely be more analogous if you, and others, are going to insist on prayer and private hopes being the equivalent of specifically announcing on an Internet forum that you hope Scott LLoyd's 12 year old son will someday reject the Church. Or, in Nyal's case, hoping that my children will as well (all of whom are minors).

by the way, the answer to the THAT question is "0"...and I can honestly say that I've heard nothing that would resemble that prayer uttered in the Church.

For the slow to read - I don't care if you hope that an adult rejects this or that, but leave minor children out of the discussion.

Well, my goodness. If the church is true, why wouldn't you hope that minor children grow up and convert to the church?

by the way, when I left the church my children were under the age of eight, with the exception of the oldest, who had barely turned eight. None of them were ever baptized. I had requested "no contact" from the church and I was attending an Episcopalian church with my children. Yet for years members called my house inviting my children to various Primary activities. Ya think maybe they were hoping my children would eventually reject my teachings and convert to the church? I know my parents sure hoped so.

Gee...I don't know...when you are out in public, do you stop parents and tell them everything you think they're doing wrong with their children? If so, you're just plain rude and have an exceedingly high sense of self-importance. If not, then it seems you are being inconsistent since you seem to think it no big deal here.

Well, my goodness, it must have something to do with an elevated level of respect I have for the parent-child relationship and the fact that I think public expressions of disdain for such parental choices to be classless. Have we come full-circle now?

My opinion? They should have respected the "no contact" request and left you, and your kids, alone.

I see. So it's only the expression of the hope that is distasteful, not the hope itself.

This is quite in keeping with the mentality I've encountered on the internet with LDS who insist that it's ok to not believe in the church, or even think that the claims of the church are ludicrous - but it's not ok to actually express those opinions.

Is it ever ok to express the hope that some children will reject the teachings and/or beliefs and practices of their parents? Or is this taboo restricted to religion?

My opinion? They should have respected the "no contact" request and left you, and your kids, alone.

So were they a "class act"?

For pointing out that it's inappropriate to express (in an open forum) that the 12 year. old child of someone the OP despises rejects his father's teachings? Really? I'm the one being silly?

We do? Interesting...I must not have gotten the memo on this one. by the way, before you head down an incorrect path - I'm the only active sibling in my family - none of the other 4 have anything to do with the Church. Nor did my own father from the time he turned 12. I know whereof I speak.

Having served in the Young Men's presidency as the Deacon advisor (Deacons are 12 and 13 year old boys) I testify that we hoped and prayed for 12 year old boys to join the church. We talked about it often in our presidency meetings. What could we do to get more boys into our quorums? We challenged the boys to bring their friends to activities. We had lessons on member missionary work that we taught to our 12-17 year old boys. You must have missed the memo.
