Gillette Understands What God Does Not

It was announced on the morning news that Gillette has dumped Tiger Woods as a representative. The mere mortals who run Gillette understand that a spokesman ought to be viewed as trustworthy and having integrity, else the positive association with their product will not be made.

If Mormonism - and large chunks of the Bible - are "true", then God doesn't understand this extremely simple truism: pick your representative carefully, because people associate the characteristics of that representative with your brand.

It does matter if Joseph Smith was a philanderer. It does matter if Joseph Smith had a history of fraudulent behavior in regards to treasure digging. It matters because it taints his trustworthy image, which automatically taints the brand.

Yet the rich and famous, especially if they look like TW (IMHO) often get hit upon by those who like to boast of conquests. If you want to be a TW, get yourself prepared to resist seduction. Sobriety is recommended.

There is no doubt that any alpha male will have females who are more than willing to make themselves sexually accessible to him. But there are males who are able to resist - maybe not many, but they do exist. Any godbeing would be well-advised to choose one of those males as his spokesman.

Or, maybe God chose a man who appeared like other less than decent guys so one would have to have faith to discount behavior that appeared dishonest, indecent, and lacking in integrity (not to mention "immorality")?

Or maybe God chose a less than great guy so people would see that God can work through the not so great guys?

Or maybe God chose a guy who engaged in all sorts of dishonest and cruel behavior to test the righteous? You know, to see if they could look beyond the indecent behavior and focus on the message?

Or maybe God was making it really difficult for people to have faith so only the really, SERIOUSLY chosen would believe?

Or maybe God was just trying to confuse people with the whole... "man's ways are not God's ways" thing?

Or maybe God chose Joseph Smith before the foundations of the world and was disappointed he screwed up (pardon the pun), but had no choice but to go along with it?

On the other hand, maybe God is just stupid? ;-)

Gillette has actually stated that they will be "limiting" their involvement with Tiger Woods.


Gillette spokesman Mike Norton said that while the company's decision to reduce Woods's role in its marketing was a direct result of Woods's announcement, Gillette, a unit of Procter & Gamble Co., is not severing all ties with Woods.

"Tiger is still part of Gillette,'' Norton said. " We support him as he takes a break from his professional career and that's why we're supporting him by limiting his role in our marketing programs."


Maybe God is just limiting His involvement with Joseph Smith. He did take Joseph Smith out, after all.

Something similar happened in Oz when some of our National Rugby League "heroes" were exposed over various sex scandals. Some sponsors withdrew official endorsement, and while I have little doubt that they were as incensed with the behaviour as most of the public was (don't worry the die hard supporters would never abandon the players, any more than Joseph's "inner circle" would have abandoned him), there was also a certain amount of scape goating for the sake of "public morals", in the interest of saving their own arses (especially where female sponsorship was strong). A large corporation would not do this purely out of "morals", because business is usually built on profit, not morals (governments could ban tobacco tomorrow, but the multi-billions in tax revenue might seriously dent the enconomy).

We, as people and corporations, almost always act out of self-interest and self-survival. And after all, Tiger isn't the first philanderer in US history. It's almost to be expected that this type of "Hollywood behaviour" will emerge from time to time. If corporations were really serious the list if notaries who could be taken off their list might never end. I suppose it depends too on how well known the offender is, and whether it will have a positive impact on the corporation's public image. (End cynicism.)

No. I think God values the trial of faith over the person who has not been tested. He's also told us that the prophets will not be popular in the world.

The problem is, which non LDS prophets or Christian ministers who have been embroiled in controversy have you been compelled to believe as some sort of "trial of faith"? You simply ignore them. And for good reason.

You cannot be tested when your common sense and intitution is screaming that a certain leader or self proclaimed prophet is untrustorthy. It just feels right to ignore them. If that is faith or a test, then we are right back to a God that doesn't understand.

Also, let us not forget that Master Deity is never compelled to divulge the cure for cancer, since other matters are of a more pressing nature. For example, it is of the utmost importance to be told how many ear piercings our females are allowed to possess. Really, it is about priorities, gentle people.
