Another Anti-Gay Leader Bites the Dust

Post by _Daniel2 »

Ted Haggard, Larry Craig... It never ceases to amaze me how these devoutly anti-gay (and often religiously zealous) individuals end up being the biggest closet cases. It seems obvious there are some hiding within Evergreen (Dean Byrd, for example)...

Anti-Gay Christian NARTH Leader And Gay Adoption Opponent George Rekers Found Vacationing With A Male Prostitute

Happy Happy Joy Joy! Notorious NARTH member and vigorous gay adoption opponent Dr. George Rekers was caught by the Miami New Times as he returned from a ten-day vacation with a young male prostitute that he hired on Rentboy.com.

On April 13, the "rent boy" (whom we'll call Lucien) arrived at Miami International Airport on Iberian Airlines Flight 6123, after a ten-day, fully subsidized trip to Europe. He was soon followed out of customs by an old man with an atavistic mustache and a desperate blond comb-over, pushing an overburdened baggage cart. That man was George Alan Rekers, of North Miami — the callboy's client and, as it happens, one of America's most prominent anti-gay activists. Rekers, a Baptist minister who is a leading scholar for the Christian right, left the terminal with his gay escort, looking a bit discomfited when a picture of the two was snapped with a hot-pink digital camera. Reached by New Times before a trip to Bermuda, Rekers said he learned Lucien was a prostitute only midway through their vacation. "I had surgery," Rekers said, "and I can't lift luggage. That's why I hired him."

(Though medical problems didn't stop him from pushing the tottering baggage cart through MIA.) Yet Rekers wouldn't deny he met his slender, blond escort at Rentboy.com — which features homepage images of men in bondage and grainy videos of crotch-rubbing twinks — and Lucien confirmed it.

Rekers is part of the fake pediatricians group created by NARTH.

Rekers is a board member of the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), an organization that systematically attempts to turn gay people straight. And the Huffington Post recently singled out Rekers as a member of the American College of Pediatricians — an official-sounding outfit in Gainesville that purveys lurid, youth-directed literature accusing gays of en masse coprophilia. (In an email, the college's Lisa Hawkins wrote, "ACPeds feels privileged to have a scholar of Dr. Rekers' stature affiliated with our organization. I am sure you will find Prof. Rekers to be an immaculate clinician/scholar, and a warm human being.")

Congratulations to the Miami New Times! Here's Rekers' Facebook page, should you care to write him a note congratulating him on his excellent taste in boy hookers.

UPDATE: I've just put a call in to the Family Research Council to see if Tony Perkins has anything to say about their co-founder. I'm not holding my breath, but it was a fun call to make.

And here's the original article:

Christian right leader George Rekers takes vacation with "rent boy"
By Penn Bullock and Brandon K. Thorp Thursday, May 6 2010

The pictures on the Rentboy.com profile show a shirtless young man with delicate features, guileless eyes, and sun-kissed, hairless skin. The profile touts his "smooth, sweet, tight ass" and "perfectly built 8 inch cock (uncut)" and explains he is "sensual," "wild," and "up for anything" — as long you ask first. And as long as you pay.

That's why I hired him." (Though medical problems didn't stop him from pushing the tottering baggage cart through MIA.)

Yet Rekers wouldn't deny he met his slender, blond escort at Rentboy.com — which features homepage images of men in bondage and grainy videos of crotch-rubbing twinks — and Lucien confirmed it.

At the small western Miami townhome he shares with a roommate, a nervous Lucien expressed surprise when we told him that Rekers denied knowing about his line of work from the beginning. "He should've been able to tell you that," he said, fidgeting and fixing his eyes on his knees. "But that's up to him."

For decades, George Alan Rekers has been a general in the culture wars, though his work has often been behind the scenes. In 1983, he and James Dobson, America's best-known homophobe, formed the Family Research Council, a D.C.-based, rabidly Christian, and vehemently anti-gay lobbying group that has become a standard-bearer of the nation's extreme right wing. Its annual Values Summit is considered a litmus test for Republican presidential hopefuls, and Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter have spoken there. (The Family Research Council would not comment about Rekers's Euro-trip.)

He has also influenced American politics, serving in advisory roles with Congress, the White House, and the Department of Health and Human Services and testifying as a state's witness in favor of Florida's gay adoption ban. A former research fellow at Harvard University and a distinguished professor of neuropsychiatry at the University of South Carolina, Rekers has published papers and books by the hundreds, with titles like Who Am I? Lord and Growing Up Straight: What Families Should Know About Homosexuality.

"While he keeps a low public profile, his fingerprints are on almost every anti-gay effort to demean and dehumanize LGBT people," says Wayne Besen, a gay rights advocate in New York City and the executive director of Truth Wins Out, which investigates the anti-gay movement. "His work is ubiquitously cited by lobby groups that work to deny equality to LGBT Americans. Rekers has caused a great deal of harm to gay and lesbian individuals."

Rekers lectures worldwide, from Europe to the Middle East, on teen sexuality. Yet during his ten-day sojourn with Lucien to London and Madrid, he had no lectures scheduled. Both men deny having sex on the trip, and emails exchanged between the two before their jaunt are cautiously worded.

"I'd like to propose another trip to Rome, Italy, for a week or more," Rekers wrote in an email dated March 21 obtained by New Times. "This is so exciting to have a nice Travel Assistant and traveling companion! Wow! I'm so glad I met you."

"I called and talked to the reservation guy in London and reserved a room with two twin beds," Rekers wrote on March 26.

"Now that I'm packed, tomorrow I'll work on completing my income tax return," Rekers wrote two days later. "Not fun... But I'll just remind myself that the fun trip is coming soon."

In his interview with New Times, Lucien didn't want to impugn his client, but he made it clear they met through Rentboy.com, which is the only website on which he advertises his services. Neither Google nor any other search engine picks up individual Rentboy.com profiles, any more than they pick up individual profiles on eHarmony or Match.com. You cannot just happen upon one.

Who is Dean Byrd?

He's the LDS church's legitimate-sounding, totally "non-official" henchman when it comes to all thing "SSA." He appears to be an expert, when, in reality, his views are totally distorted and unreflective of the understanding of every major medical, psychological, and psychiatric professional organization, today.

Here's his bio from Evergreen International:

A. Dean Byrd, PhD, MBA, MPH. Dr. Byrd is the President of the Thrasher Research Fund. He is a Clinical Professor at the University of Utah Medial School with appointments in Psychiatry, Family Preventative Medicine, and the Department of Family Studies. He received his doctoral degree from Brigham Young University. He holds two post-doctorates (one in Child and Family Psychology and one in Behavioral Medicine). He holds a master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) and one in Public Health. Dr. Byrd has authored four books, including Homosexuality and The Church of Jesus Christ, Mormons & Homosexuality: Setting the Record Straight, and more than 50 publications. He has held leadership positions with NARTH and is a former member of the Evergreen Board of Trustees.
Keynote speaker at the 11th Annual Evergreen conference, September 14-15, 2001, and at the 2nd Annual Evergreen conference, May 8-9, 1992.

Some of his books include:

Mormons and Homosexuality: Setting the Record Straight
Encouraging Heterosexuality: Helping Children Develop a Traditional Sexual Orientation
Homosexuality and the Church of Jesus Christ
Willpower is Not Enough: Why We Don't Succeed at Change

Many of which are available through Evergreen's online bookstore here:

In my discussions with many ex-LDS gay men, it's been pretty common that all of our "gaydar" has TOTALLY gone off, when watching, meeting, or talking with Dean Byrd. (David C. Pruden is another LDS "SSA expert" and author in a similar vein).

Thanks, Euthyphro. :)

Nice to be seen. I spend a lot more of my time posting over at MAD than I do here, though I'm a frequent lurker on this board, and appreciate many of the discussions.

My reasons for the locations of my posting habits are often reflective of what Christ said when he taught, "They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick." Sadly, many posters over on MAD are so saturated in their own anti-gay, homophobic (my use of this term isn't laden the ladent malice that many on MAD associate with it), and/or heterocentric rhetoric that they aren't even aware of it (and in case anyone wonders, yes... I'm aware that anyone from MAD could potentially read that statement, so I don't make it with the intention or desire of being covert about my view on that matter). A primary motivator for my frequent posts is to help educate--and potentially assist in healing--those that are vicitims of their own socialized/religious intolerance when it comes to homosexual family members, friends, and acquaintances.

I suppose we'll never know for sure.

Ongoing discoveries and revelations of these types of high-profile, anti-gay men surely are further testiments to the enduring and influential role of human sexuality and romantic attractions, and the failure of so-called "repartive" therapy concepts (both principles that I believe are true, whether we're straight or gay).

I believe being gay is a choice. A choice made by God.

Heterocentric? I like that word.

Maybe it's just me but I think the way this guy set it up so that he was likely to be found out.

I think the more interesting question is why so many high-profile anti-gay people are homosexual. I'm sure the anti-gay movement can come up with an excuse about exposure to the gay lifestyle. It just seems like a curiosity. What drives it? Self-loathing? Confusion? Some kind of strange fetish gratified by both fighting and indulging in something?

That's certainly a great question. Although... perhaps, I'd flip it around:

Why are so many homosexuals so high-profilishly (is that a word? lol) anti-gay...?

I believe it's because they're fighting so hard against their own homosexuality that they believe their acting in society's best interest to enact and support laws, policies, procedures, and therapies that will discourage anyone from acting in accordance with their homosexual thoughts and feelings.

Certainly, self-loathing would seem to feed into that. So would religious ideology promoting heterosexist and/or homophobic ideals.
