So, Dr. Shades, Schryver was just making it up all along?

Post by _Nomad »

Though I confess I have paid very little attention to this message board over the years, one thing I have noticed is how many times Dr. Shades has suggested that William Schryver was simply "making up" all the things he has ever said about being personally involved in Book of Abraham studies. As I recall, he has suggested that Schryver was lying about examining the papyri and KEP, about working with Gee and Hauglid, about writing a book, etc. I think he's even suggested that Bryan Hauglid's reported upcoming book about the KEP is just another part of Schryver's big ruse.

So, Dr. Shades, are you still sticking by your guns given recent developments?
... she said that she was ready to drive up to Salt Lake City and confront ... Church leaders ... while well armed. The idea was ... dropped ... [because] she didn't have a 12 gauge with her.

It's important to differentiate between Schryver bluffing that his hand is even stronger than previously bluffed, and Schryver actually putting his cards on the table for people to see.

Yes, I am.

Yes, I am.

I admire a captain willing to go down with his ship. I really do.

So, does this mean you believe he "made up" the claim of speaking at the FAIR conference, too?

Has the fat lady sung yet?

Of course not. Speaking at a FAIR conference is easy. Hell, look at some of the people they've had in the past.

On the other hand, the very notion that a repulsive, arrogant, unqualified, revolting, ignorant, uneducated, boisterous, sexist, braggadocious loose cannon would be granted unprecedented hands-on access to the church's most sensitive Book of Abraham documents, the very selfsame documents that were flatly denied to eminently qualified Egyptologist John Gee himself, is something else entirely.

But hey, go ahead and swallow that fish story if you want. Maybe Juliann can give you the transcript while you're at it.

Dr. Shades,

Do you have a link to more information that talks about how John Gee did not get access and Will did? I'm new to the scene.

Thanks,

Zee.

Unfortunately, no. William has jumped in and made extremely grandiose claims every so often; I'd have no idea where they are. To my knowledge, he hasn't started any dedicated threads about them, thus making the individual posts that much harder to track down. But they're here somewhere.

Basically, he claims that he's working on some master uber-manuscript that's perpetually soon-to-be published that's in turn based on research he's conducted on the very papyrii and KEP themselves. He claims that he's shared tidbits of his insights with the cream-of-the-crop at the Maxwell Institute, the Mopologetic best and brightest, and they've been universally astounded at the breadth and depth of his discoveries. Naturally, he's claimed that his groundbreaking work, the final word on all things Book of Abraham, will shut the critics up forever.

My theory is that his upcoming FAIR presentation simply results from the Mopologists' desperation for someone, anyone--no matter how abysmally unqualified--to pick up the torch and become their Book of Abraham Great White Hope du jour.

Sorry for my ignorance, but why isn't someone like John Gee presenting? Why is there desperation?

He has presented in the past. Unfortunately, he didn't exactly tell them what they wanted to hear.

Why is there desperation?

They know that the Book of Abraham is the church's--and the Mopologists'--achilles heel, so anyone who claims to be able to beat the critics is automatically going to get a warm reception. All of their best and brightest have lined up only to fail miserably, so they're only too pleased when a fresh face appears and wishes to pick up the baton.

Zeezrom, although Nimrod's opening post was directed to me--thus making me the most qualified one to answer it, of course--Kevin Graham is far more qualified to answer the specific questions that you are asking me. Perhaps you should start a thread with his name in it, or send him a PM.
