All these building projects, no matter how losing they are and overpriced, are opportunities to crack the piggy bank open and hand out money to family members who are contractors etc.

I think you meant billion.

Agreed.

I am in the payroll biz here in Utah and have worked with hundreds of construction companies. I cannot recall the contractor's name, but the church uses one contractor for all the temple construction. Perhaps Mighty builder can chime in if he knows the name. Basically, the contractor is related to a senior general authority, has a fixed and healthy profit margin, and has made a mint.

It is a sore spot for other contractors because there is no sharing of work or competitive bidding.

Of course, the church does bid out its church building landscaping duties. If you don't employee latinos that are paid under the table, you probably won't get your bid low enough to get the church's business.

1.5 "million"?

I think you need to reconsider that figure.

As the world's most expensive buildings go, how does the City Creek Mall rate? Is it # 1?

Question: If a chunk of building fell out of the sky in the United States, wouldn't there be hell to pay?

I can see how pretty much anything goes in a third world armpit like Mexico City. But how does one get past codes, permits and inspection to reform (NOT restore) a building in the US?

Has the church gotten approval for this billion dollar face saving makeover or is a portion of the estimate including all of the payoffs?

Please remember where the COB is located, and who controls the government in said location.

I think that's a DUH statement.

This is just one more example of the stupidity and pride of our leaders. Buildings get old, they wear out, they get razed and rebuilt every day. Only a pack of fools would think OUR building is exempt from the wear and tear of daily life, and that includes shoddy workmanship, cheap materials, and stupid decisions.

It is amazing how many folks just blindly nod their head and believe what some random poster claims.

I am sure if they said he also got the building permits for a child rape room, you'd nod and say "I knew they were up to something".

Such foaming at the mouth over LDS Church dirt.

That's the point, JMS. The church never acknowledges that they have, create, or bathe in dirt.

Mighty builder's claims seem consistent with the body of knowledge about past and current church budget's. I am skeptical of a 1.34 billion dollar retrofit/recladding amount for the COB. Sometimes retrofits are more expensive than new construction, but at 1.3 billion, you could build a new Taj Majal.

Yeah, but no one is saying that, implied it, nor in any way referenced anything so outlandish. Goes to show the paranoid imaginations of believers that are willing to demonize any criticisms of their cherished beliefs.

"Foaming", you mean incredulity between the contrast of the "human" church over its appearance based "holiness" facade?

The church is a man made institution and everything points to that fact. That is why we discuss its human errors and foibles. And it is fun.
