JSM thinks you would be laughed at because you thought Coyne was an ignoramus simply for expressing the idea that math is invented rather than discovered. That's a mainstream view, so why would he be an ignoramus merely because he expressed it?

Has anyone ever experienced someone so painfully desperate to appear intelligent as CC wants to appear?

He really can't think very much of himself (not surprising; I don't think much of him either). His family time must have consisted of his parents beating the crap out of him and force feeding him dog feces. How else does one turn out like him? It can't be just bad genes, can it?

It's quite interesting, actually. He's like a roadside decapitation I can't seem to turn away from, or a bum in an ally lying in a puddle of his own piss I feel like chucking a pity dollar at to assuage my social conscience for having seen him. Poor bastard.

Some Schmo,

I lack the requisite background in abnormal psychology to help you but EA is a skilled diagnostician; perhaps he can pencil you in.

Whether or not I was fair to Coyne, I doubt most mathematicians would find my comments risible.

You think it's abnormal to take pity on the mentally destitute? Hmph. I guess that's one of the many side effects of being intellectually handicapped.

Just when I didn't think I could feel more pity for you, in you come to up the ante.
