Ironically the Mormon owner of either Cleanflix or a similar type service in Orem was arrested a year ago or so for paying young girls to give him blowjobs.

I guess too much editing got the best of Peter Priesthood..

Again, the author of the article says the Flix Club guys said the store was a front for porn sales.

The nudity and swearing were edited out. Curiously, however, the thefts, the police lying (trying to use a fake search warrant), Dennis Leary confessing to beating up a suspect, and other acts of dishonesty were left in.

So, you see, some immoral behavior is acceptable for us to watch.

P.S. However, I do wish that I had 8 year-old friendly versions of a couple of my favorite movies, like Aliens.

Honestly, get a Clear Play DVD player. I just watched "Alien" with my kids (who were begging me to see it for Halloween), and it did a great job cutting out the most graphic bits without interrupting the story. I wasn't sure how they would flag the part at the end where Ripley is in her underwear, but I left the "sex" settings at max filtering just to see and it actually cut out all the shots of her in her undressed state!

It was actually still watchable though, and I was pretty tired so I didn't mind having it get to the end a little quicker.

bcspace wrote: But you can hardly complain. If I recall correctly, the local store was able to do a custom edit

You recall incorrectly. At least, when I was a member (c. 2003-2004), I specifically asked CleanFlix about doing a custom edit of a DVD that I owned and they said they don't do them. They had a list of movies that they had decided the edits for and if your movie wasn't on their list, they wouldn't touch it (the movie I requested wasn't on the list). Otherwise the edits were standardized.

So if you wanted Terminator 3 edited, you were getting it with their stupid edits or you weren't getting it at all. This is generally my problem with saying "I refuse to watch rated R movies" or "I only watch CleanFlix films." I'm not going to let the MPAA or CleanFlix do my thinking for me.

I don't believe the DVD editing machine was around when I was a member, and I've long lost interest in taking my movies edited.

Or one can just grow up and watch these films as the filmmakers intended them or say "no" to them altogether. Which is what I did.

And here I thought having premarital sex then lying about it at your ecclesiastical endorsement was the way it was done. Silly me.

cinepro ~ Thanks for the recommend on the ClearPlayer DVD. My daughter is only 4 and not interested in violent movies yet, but I'll keep it in mind for when she gets older and starts begging to delve into Mommy's horror collection.

Runtu, I remember glancing at that article. Can you tell us what happened to that owner of Cleanflix?

I am wondering also if the Professor at Utah Valley University who wrote this article was put on double secret probation for writing something that was not first cleared by Church Authorities (public or not, it still bears the name Utah Valley).

The sad part is these moral morons are cutting the artistic work of someone else without permission. They do not own the rights to do this for anyone but themselves. By altering the movie they have trashed the work of the producer and actors. If those who made the movie did not want the scenes there they would not have them there.

If they don't like the movies as produced, make their own. Don't alter the artistic creation of someone else.

As was noted in the article, the owners reopened under the name "Flix Club," but that was shut down when they paid two 14-year-old girls for oral sex. When the place was raided, the police found a ton of porn videos in the back room.

Were they made by stitching together all the "naughty" bits cut out of the cleaned-up movies?

I am wondering how students who refuse to view the class material can pass the class.
This strikes me as being along the same lines as SVU's women's soccer team. Like those women on the team, these students who refuse to view the class material, would not be participating in the class at all if they really had strength in their convictions. The soccer team agreed to the terms of the tournament and then preened piously in their refusal to play on Sunday. These UVU students are remaining in the class and then refusing to view class material on "religious" ground. Just another case of "look at me see how devout I am".

I understand movies are heavily collaborative projects and therefore there never is really one "vision" for the end-product in the way there can be for other forms of art. Sure some directors are auteurs and some writers have an army of editors, but for the most part movie-making is at the top-end of being multiple artistic visions coming together. Still, I consider the final cut to be a unified artistic statement, however crappy it sometimes might be, and it seems wrong on a variety of levels to edit it for your viewing. To me, that's like walking through an art gallery with a magic marker and a pair of scissors cutting and crossing out things you don't want to see in the paintings. If its too naughty for you to watch, then don't watch it.
