Missionaries pose threat to local workforce?

Switzerland is considering treating Mormon missionaries the same as paid immigrant workers.

What if they teach English free of charge? Would that be competition for local English tutors?

We can only hope the Swiss continue to deter the Mormon missionary efforts in their country.

Older missionaries called to work on church farms and in church owned businesses are a detriment to local workers finding jobs. The church gets free labor, but the local worker has no job.

By this logic I should not be allowed to volunteer at my soup kitchen because I'm taking up local jobs.

Also true. Gainful employment involves an economic benefit to both parties. Missionaries may benefit but it won't be economic.

A decision by the Swiss courts established that missionary work is considered gainful employment and therefore subject to quotas.
Hope and a prayer
The Swiss embassy responded to the request by Congress members – who included Harry Reid, Majority Leader in the Senate – in an October letter offering hope for a possible solution through dialogue and other means.
“Laws can be amended and regulations can be changed but it will be up to the relevant communities involved to initiate those changes,” Urs Ziswiler, the Swiss ambassador at the time, wrote in the correspondence.
Ziswiler told swissinfo.ch: “We have several similar cases from other countries and to make an exception for the Mormons would create a precedent.”
There are 7000 Church members in Switzerland. Do they not have the right to have young men from the western United States pester/proselytize their neighbors? Where is
their liberty???!!!
To ask the European missionaries to pick up the slack might be an unreasonable undertaking since there are so few members there anyway. They are denying young Mormon Elders their rite of passage. How will they pick up extra credits and girls at BYU now?

Unless they've changed the rules the missionaries still aren't getting an economic benefit.
