I saw that in the DesNews this morning. Seems to me the most likely reason for selling profitable businesses is a cash-flow problem. Maybe the church employees' pension fund is tapped out.

The cannibalization of LD$ Inc. has begun..
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

Bills for the City Creek project debt need to be payed. If these debts went to an out of state court collection process, someone would probably ask to see the Church books.

Very good, Simon. Beneficial Financial Group (owned by the Church) laid off most of its employees and stopped writing new insurance policies. Beneficial Life is being shut down. The Church itself had a hiring freeze. The prices for condominiums at City Creek are being cut by 50%. The Church has eliminated having paid custodians for local meetinghouses. And now the Church is divesting itself of a large part of its media holdings.

There is no reasonable inference that can be drawn from all this. Maybe it's just another straw man, Simon.

Yes there is. The economy is in dire straits right now. The United States is in the hole 14 trillion dollars, with a staggering unemployment rate and an all but destroyed housing market. It's going to take us years to get out of this one, although there are some glimmers of hope.

The fact that critics blame everything on the Church is a real disappointment; and here I thought there were some intelligent criticisms being put forth here.

What "blame" was put on the Church in this thread, Simon? Please be specific.

Also, what relevance does the $14 trillion deficit of the U.S. government---which includes future obligations for Social Security and Medicare, not current insolvency---have to the LDS Church? Please be specific.

Oh, and just wondering: when you take graduate-level classes in philosophy, do they explain to you what a straw man fallacy is?

The Mighty Bigot is clearly posting this information to mock and ridicule the Church. That is why he posts information about "genetically engineered trout" and streams running through City Creek mall and get's all angry about it. What he doesn't realize is that, if it weren't for City Creek and other Church projects, TMB probably would not have a job. It is because the Church is not true, no doubt, that they are selling some radio markets! This is the inference of TMB.

The $14 Trillion in debt is also due to stimulus packages that, as of yet, haven't worked (I wish they had). China is our largest debtor, and if they wanted to they could bankrupt us. Some states are already bankrupt. People don't have jobs, therefore there is less tithing and other donation money coming in to the Church. As well, the Church welfare system is probably being taxed, therefore increasing the financial burden of the Church. So they sold some radio stations... big freaking deal.
