By the end Joe had come to believe in his own con.

Not really. Its more that one does not have to become a Mormon on this earth to be in the celestial kingdom. Some will, in essence, accept the truth after this world and the term Mormon will most likely be obsolete then.

Well then your original response here doesn't make sense to me:

I thought it was in response to what I had written.

I don't know where you got the idea that I said anything like, "being baptized by proxy isn't receiving the Holy Ghost? I guess I never thought of it that way, ya only need the Holy Ghost when you are alive"

I agree that it's quite possible that Smith didn't believe his own con. Which do you think it was?

Something far outside of the false dichotomy you've constructed.

It's a dichotomy, but not false. Joseph was a con artist before he every got the idea about the golden Bible.

You guys, so darned negative about a great man who has done more for mankind than anyone but Jesus and has held a church together where Jesus could not do it!

You are just jealous of him 'marryng' foster daughters, the wives of his Apostles and all the women he was able to take to himself. You are just jealous that he was favored by God to be the first of this dispesation to wear long johns with secret magic markings. You are just jealous that he started his own bank and didn't even have to pay people back when it failed - though it was not his fault. Nothing was ever his fault.

You are just jealous because he was so good with the greased rod and finding where to work it. Jealous of his magic peepstones and his great wrestling talent. Gorgeous George was an ugly duckling and MMA only wishes it had someone of his great talents.

Yep, Joseph had his own gold plates given to him by an angel, found real jewish Indians, was a General(the top rank in the US if not the world, probably higher than Saddam Hussein - he maximum leader of Iraq) and he was running for President of the US. All the while he was President of lds-inc, though first Pres of the Church of Christ and then some other name before Jesus decided to call it what it became and stayed the same until it was changed again to what it is today. But, Mormons still worship Joseph Smith - he who walked with Manny, Moe and Jack, the three Nephites who get their jollies by zapping Cain/Bigfoot with cattle prods.(a little known revelation of Joe foretold this, among other big and really big and really, really big stuff yet to come)

No matter what happens you can sip your wine and cry in your beer knowing you aren't Joseph Smith

Bow your head and mutter, what in hell am I doing here?

Shut up all of you. Do you all and Sandra Tanner think that spouting this mantra 100 times a day makes it true? I would carry within me certain death in a vile that would melt the instant any of you could diminish my love and confidence in the Prophet Joseph Smith. I know that I am a true saint of the Most High God. Knowing what I know I am certain Joseph Smith was too. There are things that the world cannot appreciate that warrant the sanctified. It takes one to know one.

Nightlion, I would like to testify to you of the surety of knowledge I have that Joseph Smith was not a prophet of God. I testify to you that he was an amoral man who deceitfully bamboozled credulous hicks out of their money, land, wives and daughters. I testify that I know these things as a matter of fact. I hold no ill will towards those who were cheated by Smith, nor towards their descendants. But it has become my moral obligation and duty to warn those who profess to be willing to listen that these things I say are true.

Thank you for listening.

This is a creepy picture:

Image

Joseph married several children this age. And he slept with other men's wives. He was a creep and a predator.
