So, all of those statements to church members about blacks back in the day -- doctrine by your account, correct?

This is also incorrect as doctrine is not only the interpretation of the sources (which we cannot do for the Church) but also current inspiration not found in the sources of the standard works. Therefore, the published doctrine is more authoritative than the source in the case of the scriptures.

For example, "born of water" John 3:5 is interpreted as physical birth by some sects and water baptism by the LDS Church. Therefore, the Church's definition/interpretation, in other words doctrine) is more authoritative than the source (the New Testament) itself.

Then we disagree. All I know is what we had in writing when I worked for the church, which I have consistently and repeatedly explained. Scriptures, proclamations, official declarations, and First Presidency statements are more authoritative and binding than are, say, Primary manuals.

Well, I have some good new and some bad news for you. Whichever answer you chose, you are both correct and incorrect. Both of these propositions are official doctrine of the LDS Church.
