Re: The word sucks
Vacuums suck. Drivers screw. Eggs get laid. Funny how innocent words become evil.
In England the word "bloody" was never spoken in polite company in the early part of the 20th century (more acceptable now). The funny thing is that no one really knows what it means, lost to history. If you look up the etymology, you only get guesses at what it once meant.
It's a word that is morally shunned, but has no meaning. I love this language!

Re: The word sucks
My Mom hated the word sucks and didn't want us to use it when we were kids. I never really understood why but I still used it because I did not consider it a swear word. I still don't think of the sexual act when I use the word sucks.
My Mom also hates the word crap and she says you might as well say crap if you are going to say crap. I would still use the word crap pretty often.
You know I think some people just try to find dirty meanings in everything. I remember them turning some songs off at the dances because some people were offended by the song because it was dirty. I remember one being turned off and it was not dirty at all but someone was positive they were meaning something else in the song. I can't remember the song but man there were a bunch of uptight TBM's that didn't want to have any fun. I think they would have perfered church hymns at dances or something like that.

I actually remember when I learned the word "dildo" at school that not even my Dad knew what it meant.

Bloody = "By our lady". It's a contraction. (Like it's.)
Similarly, the quaint old Shakespearian "Zounds" (pronounced zoonds) is a contraction of "God's wounds."

Yep, that is the foremost theory (although a little clumsy). There are a few others. "Bloody Jesus" (Jesus on the cross) might be another good one. No definitive etymology, though.

When it was banned in my house my brothers and I looked the word up. We changed our terminology accordingly.
