How could it be viewed as absurd and authoritarian?

It's a call for censorship.

I think it's people just asking you to change it.

Beavis,
The board is not a popularity contest, so whether on not you change your screen name or avatar is up to you. You have every right to leave it.
My own personal opinion is that Nightlion brings something unusual to this board. He really is sincere about his prophetic calling and is willing to openly discuss his beliefs. If he asked me, for what ever reason, to change my screen name and or avatar, and I did not have a personal reason to keep it, I would out of respect for him. I believe he has earned that respect. I also believe him when he says it offends him. I do not think he does so arbitrarily.
Now if it were Stak asking me, well that is another story.

It may be your screen name, not just your avatar, that some people are finding blasphemous.
I don't think it has to do with censorship, but in addition to Nightlion, who as said really is a unique personality here, you may be limiting the extent to which believing Christians may be willing to interact with you (there are many active and interesting board members who are believing Protestants and Catholics, in addition to Latter-day Saints).
But I have to second the idea that if MrStakhanovite politely requested that I change something he found needlessly offensive, I would tell him to get bent.

Nightlion is truly our only Prophet (unless someone else is holding out on us). I hope he decides to stay. That being said, his issuing of an ultimatum is out of line. I can agree that he is within his rights to voice his opinion, but that should not dictate the actions of anyone else.
Nightlion's claim of being the true Prophet and his claim of divine inspiration might be held as offensive by others here (I've read comments along those lines).
No one has threatened to leave unless Nightlion does.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

That is a very good point. And if you really want to see a self-proclaimed prophet's opinion, all you have to do is visit godhatesfags.com, especially since Nightlion is apparently too stupid to use the enemy feature here.
I don't really care what he thinks, however, I think Darth's point about certain believers being offended might be worth considering. I like this Mormon topics board because it is not as skewed as much as the other ones out there in either direction.

It is a fun board! I can support your choice of avatar, even if others cannot. I can also support you if you decide to change it a little.
I have a lot of respect for Darth, but I can't help being a little amused at Darth's comments. If one were to poll apologists on this board as to who was the most annoying, Darth would win hands down. :) A badge of honor, really.
