When I think of an apostate, I think of someone like Nightlion who comes out with his own brand of religious thinking and proselytizes others. Nightlion does this out of his own inner religious convictions.
This definition would never fit with someone who has simply left the Church. Most people who leave are tempest tost into the sea of agnosticism till they either wash onto the shores of atheism permanently or eventually set sail on a life raft to a less barren destination.
