What is critical is not just public opinion but voter public opinion. What are the percentages of pro and con for people who vote?

The same trends are tracking in the population of likely voters, but lagging behind. This is because the voter population is older than the general population. It's also why it's wise for drives to legalize gay marriage at the ballot box are best done during presidential elections when youth turnout is higher.

Nate Silver has been on this for a while, but the most interesting thing about that graph is how the massive efforts to oppose gay marriage in '04 to drive up social conservative voter turnout for the Bush reelection campaign represent a tiny, but measurable blip in the overall trend.

I agree. I wonder if by 2012 if the majority of the voting population with be in favor of Gay marriage or if we will have to wait another 4 years for them to catch up on this issue?
