The used and abused: holy ghost

The holy ghost (3rd member of the godhead) has an enormous task. He is in charge of communicating words and thoughts from God to all people. In essence, he is tasked with purveying truth to all.

He could be considered the ultimate middleman. The epitome of the go between. The executive secretary of the celestial, infinite bishopric.

What does he get in return? No glory. No body. Nobody that talks to him. Nobody stops to address him.

Poor guy.

I would like to take a moment to consider what he has done for mankind. Consider praying to him tonight. Say hello. Introduce yourself. Im sure he'd appreciate it.

I heard its a role title, not a given person ... people rotate through

i.e. it's been said Joseph Smith had held the office

Thanks Rock. I had never heard such a thing as doctrine. That is an interesting idea. Why was the name "spirit" given to a role? Maybe because it isn't a physical entity?

I've considered the idea of all the spirits of the deceased helping their fellow mortals.

Well, if we decide to rid ourselves of the holy ghost entity, why stop there? Why wouldn't our deceased brothers and sisters also take on the role of god? I mean, why not?

Are you sure about that Rockslider?

I think the Chapel Mormon doctrine of the Holy Ghost is that he is indeed a distinct personage of spirit.

Now, an "Elias" is an office that several individuals have held including Joseph Smith.

Let the Internet Mormons say differently, for they know no doctrine.

You left out the cloak of invisibility and well as transformational abilities.

This is an interesting topic, Z. I've often wondered what/ who the Holy Ghost was and why he is important. I have done some reading about him, but there is not much out there. I do remember reading that the denial of the Holy Ghost is the worst possible sin, but I don't think it gave a reason why.

All I know for sure is that he caught the last train to the coast the day the music died.

Thanks Quas. I was feeling sorry for the HG today.

Here's another question:

We know the HG is a spirit without a body (yet). How does being a spirit make it possible for him to be in more than one place at the same time?

If spirits could be in more than one place at the same time, the same could be said about our own spirit.

No worries Catholic talk to him, they even have "scripted" prayers to Him. Here's one if you'd like to say hello and pray to Him tonight.

Spirit of wisdom and understanding, enlighten our minds to perceive the mysteries of the universe in relation to eternity. Spirit of right judgment and courage, guide us and make us firm in our baptismal decision to follow Jesus' way of love. Spirit of knowledge and reverence, help us to see the lasting value of justice and mercy in our everyday dealings with one another. May we respect life as we work to solve problems of family and nation, economy and ecology. Spirit of God, spark our faith, hope and love into new action each day. Fill our lives with wonder and awe in your presence which penetrates all creation. Amen.

Once again, the Catholics have piqued my interest. Thanks!
