While alcohol remains a major cause of liver disease, according to the report by the International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research, it is excessive alcohol that does the damage.
Frequent but moderate alcohol consumption can reduce the chances of fatty liver – the cause of many diseases – by up to 60 per cent, it said.
This was far more effective than drinking nothing at all and even better than light drinking, but only occasionally.
The research, conducted in Japan, recorded the drinking habits of 9,885 men.
