First, I do not apologize for, make excuses for, or attempt to make light of the enormously long list of disturbing, disgusting, serious,and sad parts of the 2,000 year resume that clearly belongs stapled to those who were part of the Catholic Church.
Without question, there has been neglect, abuses of power, Priest pedophiles, Indulgences sold, Inquisition, corruption, to simply name a few.

Having said that, I am Catholic because I believe that the Catholic Church is firmly rooted in Scripture, is the Church that the Lord had left us with and promised us would stand until the end.
Simply put, I am Catholic because I believe the Catholic Church represents the very base of Christianity.

* BUT * Now that I have read the link in the OP, I am leaving the Catholic Church. :)

I've been waiting for the perfect opportunity to make Mormonism more enticing than Catholicism.

Very fair response. I come from a long line of Atheists, Agnostics, and....Catholics. I actually had some clergy in the extended family but they have since passed. I grew up in Pgh so the community is highly Catholic. I see no problems with Catholics. I am just wondering how Catholics can take shots at Mormons when they both dwell in the same type of glass houses?

You must not know some of the ones I do (He he he). Like any other group of people who cement these labels upon their chest, the Catholics have there fair share of arrogant, judgemental, and self righteous people in their fold.

Although "glass" can surely be found in both , I would suggest that the "houses" are constructed on entirely different foundations and they have been built using very different materials.

Also, I agree that there are some/many Catholics who "take shots" all over the place (including but certainly not limited to Mormons), but I would suggest that we consider not using such a wide brush when painting the picture of "Catholics take shots at Mormons" (One reason, I would suggest, is that there are millions of Catholics who don't have a clue what a Mormon is.)

One of my favorite books is a historical work by E.R. Chamberlin called The Bad Popes. I'm sure there will be quibbling over some of the historical details found therein. It's more difficult to figure out what actually happened in the case of Pope John XII than the book implies, for instance. But there is no denying some astounding levels of moral decay and corruption in the history of the papacy that modern Popes couldn't hope to achieve - certainly not by just playing a role in shielding child rapists from the law. It's been that bad.

But here's the thing, while many Catholics probably aren't aware of the exact details and depths of depraved acts that have happened under the Church, I've never met a Catholic who wasn't aware that the Church has had some very troubling, sordid episodes in its history. It's not like the Inquisition or the sale of indulgences is a big secret. And if they can accept that fallibility in the past, then why not the present?
