I guess the "speaking as a man" apologetic wasn't fully formed back then.

I'm unaware of any prophet saying from the pulpit that they are speaking as a man rather than a prophet or apostle of the Lord.

What critics fail to understand is that the word "wrong" had a very different meaning in 19th Century Utah than it does for us today. Presentist attempts to attach our modern understanding of the word to statements by long-deceased church leaders are yet further examples of the ignorance that pervades anti-mormon arguments. If those advancing such an argument were to do even the slightest bit of historical research, they would discover that "wrong" in 19th Century Utah actually meant "right" when used in the context of the above quote. Much as our youth often use the word "bad" to mean "good" or "cool", Brigham Young was merely using the colloquial word usage of his day.
