Believers of all stripes: which is more offensive?

Post by _Buffalo »

Someone personally attacking you or one of your friends/group, or someone saying something offensive about God?

Examples:

Jane Doe is a muckraking filth-monger and an intellectual coward. Also, she cheated on her taxes.

God is a complete bastard. I can't imagine any being more vile. I'd sooner worship a turnip.

Jane Doe IS a personal friend of mine and all of that is true (she is cute, though).

God is a big boy and can defend himself. Stand back in case there is a lightning bolt.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

Personal attacks are far worse.

I would agree, but only because I consider god a fictional character.

They are both an offense against God.

What a great answer! I'm not sure it's my opinion, but it's still a great answer, madeleine.

edited to add: I guess they could both be an offense to Jane, too.

For me, if they're true, either (or both) are okay. Isn't truth the thing that matters?

Try going in a bar in Alabama and try uttering something against God.

Now go to the bar across the street and utter something against Billy Bob.

I wouldn't use the word "offensive". But if forced to, I wouldn't be offended at either one.

However, I get very uncomfortable when one attacks God. I get defensive when one attacks a friend.
