I have always found Dr. Pederson to be nothing short of kind to me online. I have never met him in person but I am sure he is quite caring. If you look at Dr. Pederson's motives one can see that he is trying to help others as well as converse about LDS topics. My history of online LDS message board activities goes back to 2005ish. That is 7 years of discourse not nearly as much as others but enough to have some history.

Well, if you look at Mr. Z's thread a "friend" told him x-y-z about Dr. Quinn. It was far worse than being accused of being a rumormonger. That poor guy can't catch a break in the Mormon community.

It is difficult to catch a break in the LDS community when you are gay and you say things that are unpopular. It does not take a specific apologist to make that happen. It makes no sense to hold a single person responsible for that.

The claim that DCP was somehow solely responsible for Quinn getting fired from BYU is totally false. As to whether Dan has played any role in helping to shape opinion about Quinn in Mormon circles, though.... I think it's fair to say, "Yes." But to single him out as being the "leader" or whatever of some secret movement to have him blackballed---I seriously doubt it. It wouldn't surprise me if there were talk of Quinn being a "problem" or an "enemy," and that DCP participated in this and said his share of unkind things (indeed, some of these things were said openly on MAD/FAIR/MDD), but I don't think you can pin all that much of the blame on him, to be frank. Was there a "whisper campaign," and did "rumormongering" take place? I don't think there can be and doubt about that. But should all or even a majority of the blame be placed on Dr. Peterson? The answer is "No."

Amen, Trevor.

I have been saying this for months, if not years.

I consider Dan a friend. He has been very kind to me, and has always answered any questions I have had regarding doctrine, BYU policy, etc.

I am very glad to see this turn of events.

I don't know what happened on the Quinn thread and don't care to wade through it to find out. I do know that I have long found the DCP bashing not only overblown, but downright boring and usually pointless.

Me too. But I admit just knowing DCP is present on this board is really great.

No, I prefer my original sentence because the insinuation from some as of late seems to be that Dr. P. was the ringleader in all of this.

The claim is totally false that I, an untenured instructor at the time who was still working on his dissertation and teaching in an entirely separate college from Mike Quinn, played any role in Quinn's departure from BYU. (And, once again, from what I understand, Quinn wasn't fired, anyway. He quit. A subtle but perhaps significant distinction.)

Hello Mr. K,

FTFY. Dr. Quinn is vilified in the LDS communitfy for his honest and documented observations of LDS history. It would be nice if the guy could be shown some Christlike behavior from our Mopologists...

I've said before and I'll say again that I do think Dan Peterson is probably a perfectly decent guy outside of his Mopologist persona. The comments of Liz, etc. are surely a testament to that. But, as I've also said before, I think he's done remarkable evil as a Mopologist, and it bums me out that he's so unwilling to account for any of it. I said on one of Dr. Shades' current threads that I think the movement towards less posting and less Mopologetics and more MST and Mormon Times Chapel Mormonism is a good thing, and I hope to see that trend continue. I hope that the Midgley/Hamblin/DCP era fades rapidly away into the domain of largely forgotten nightmares.
