I seem to recall you talking about struggling with porn addiction and other vices at some point (booze?), but I don't know the reference. When you said this, it brought that to mind:

The abstinence violation effect speaks to black and white, all or nothing thinking like you are displaying. It has nothing to do with not having limits on behavior - it's about realizing that it's okay to screw up once in a while. It's not the end of the world.

It has nothing to do with not having limits on behavior - it's about realizing that it's okay to screw up once in a while. It's not the end of the world.

Abstinence is the best course of action regarding addiction because of the risks involved in attempting controlled use or acting out. With pornography, unlike alcohol, the evil is inherent in the activity, on both sides, both the voyeur and the participants. There is, in the Church, no "grey" area for sexual media in any sense other than there is no grey area for premarital sex, adultery, homosexual behavior, lying, stealing, cheating, or any other clear violation of gospel moral/ethical standards. There is no gray area regarding sin at all. But that's what the Atonement is all about, and the grace of Christ.
